The Importance Of Knowing Your Audience

I have to go to Juneau to the dentist, as there is no such thing in our little town. I've broken two teeth in the last month, and have to get them fixed.

I've been waiting to make an appointment until our little air service adds a second daily flight. I don't want to stay in Juneau overnight because my old cat requires extra care and I don't want to leave him for too long.

Now I can't use that excuse. We again have two flights a day, so I can go to Juneau in the morning and return home in the afternoon.

Actually, I don't mind the dentist. However, it's expensive to fly to Juneau, and the weather can be a problem when one needs to fly in and back on the same day.

The real reason I'm dreading the trip is that I will have to wear a mask for most of the day. I'm wondering how I will handle the trip, as the mask inhibits my breathing.

Then, last night I was scrolling down the Facebook "front page" and saw a headline that said something like, "Do you have to take an airline trip and are worried about breathing through a mask all day?"

I stopped scrolling and read the story. They were selling masks designed in such a way to allow air around the nose, to make breathing easier. I bought one immediately.

Will it work? I hope so. It cost me the better part of a $20 bill to find out. What is important here, though, is why I bought it so quickly.

It was the headline -- It asked the very question I'd been asking, and then proceeded to give a solution.

• When we know what they are looking for, we ask the question they have been asking, and then give them a solution.

The most important thing we can do with our websites is to give information that will fill a need a reader has. If we can demonstrate that we know how to help them, we will gain customers and followers.
