As some of you know, I left Alaska for a two-week trip to Maine with good friends of mine. Thought I'd bring you up to date on my trip. And, by the way, have posted to both my websites while I've been traveling, so am keeping up as best I can.

I can understand why I live in my small town in Alaska. We left Boston to travel to my childhood home in Old Lyme, Connecticut. It's now an inn, so we stayed there. We spent a morning just trying to figure out how to get out of Boston.

We finally found the right road, and crawled along in building traffic. At least we moved forward, though slowly. When I was a kid, people didn't like to drive long distances because the roads were curvy and slow, with lots of small towns that slowed you even more.

Now there are freeways everywhere, but it still takes forever to get anywhere because there are so many cars. No, I am not sorry I live in a sparsely-populated place.

Trees are just beginning to change to their fall colorful display. I hope they turn within two weeks so we will get some good views before heading home.

We stayed two nights in the house where I spent my first nine years. It's been a trip! I slept in the room that is the closest I could get to being in my old bedroom. It's about half the size of the original.

It contains what is perhaps the smallest bathroom ever seen in an inn. Back when I was a kid, there was no upstairs bathroom. The only bathroom in that huge house could be found downstairs at the back of the house, and of course all the bedrooms were upstairs. (The house was built in 1886.)

Everyone who stayed at the house kept a chamber pot under the bed for nights. It saved a long walk through a cold, dark house. Oh, yes, I am old enough to remember those days.

I've been traveling with my friends, Tom and Chris, from Kodiak. They are lots of fun to travel with, and Tom has been a world-class captain of the ship.

We went to Niantic, Connecticut to have freshwater Niantic River scallops, a fond memory from my childhood.(You know they have to be good if I remember them from that long ago.) After finding three closed seafood restaurants, Tom asked a man outside one of them if he knew where we could find some.

The man said, "No, there aren't any scallops any more." Then he muttered under his breath, "Wouldn't eat them anyway."

As it turned out, they'd gotten scarce, and the season had been closed for a couple of years. As luck would have it, they just opened it again this year, so there were scallops, and we found a place that had them.

The scallops are delicious! They are a bit smaller than our Alaskan sea scallops, and quite sweet. Their texture is really smooth. We had an excellent meal.

This morning we went to the Mystic Seaport Museum before hitting the road for Maine. Maybe later I'll include a few pictures of that trip. Now we are half-way to our Maine destination, and stopped for the night.

Tomorrow we reach the house in Camden, Maine, that Tom has rented for us. Since we will be there for a week, I plan to get a couple more posts on my websites. You folks will probably have to deal with a couple more updates, too. Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for reading. I'd love a comment from you, especially if you know this area. It is a great adventure for us.

I feel an affinity with Maine due to the fact that two of my favourite 'fiction' authors, use Maine as the backdrop. That would be Stephen King and John Connolly. After reading so many of their books it allows a certain familiarity, yet one that in reality is probably quite different. I look forward to your updates.

Well, Twack, we have finally made it to Maine. For sure I will be doing an update. Keep tuned, and thanks for commenting.

Loved your blog, Fran, and glad to hear that you’re enjoying your trip back to the east coast.

I grew up in upstate New York, so I know how beautiful the turning leaves can be. I, too, now live in Alaska, but haven’t had a chance to get back east for quite some time.

Will look forward to your next update. Have a safe fun trip!

Virginia

Cool that you live in Alaska! Nice to find another fellow Alaskan. Where are you located?

This is my first trip in a long time, and so far has been great fun.

I live in Nikiski, down on the Kenai Peninsula. We moved here from Denver, 11 years ago.

Nice location...I can guess it is a welcome change after Denver. Good for you.

Thank you for telling us about your beautiful trip.
Returning to our beautiful childhood memories is always very pleasant. The childhood memories often have the smell of hot chocolate and good apple pie!

Ingrid

Childhood memories are nice to re-remember in a place we haven't seen for years. It was a good experience.

Sounds like a lovely trip down memory lane.

Lily 😊

Lily, it was lovely. I recommend it...especially as I'd lived there 72 years ago. Many things have changed, but it was interesting to see what was still the same.

Hey Fran,Good for you enjoy all the best to you.

Thankl you very much. Revisiting your past can be upsetting or exciting. Fortunately, I have many good memories of those early years. It's good to return to your roots.

Glad you're having a fun time. Next week I will be in CT for about 10 days for a high school reunion and play some golf. Originally from Waterbury and will catch up with some relatives and friends. Staying in Southbury and will travel the backroads to take in the change of seasonal colors. Then we are off to NC for about a week.

Have an enjoyable vacation. All the Best.

How wonderful! Yes, because it wasn't our final destination, we didn't stay there too long. Wish we'd gotten out on more of the CT back roads. Still a little early. As we headed toward Maine today, we noticed more color. Hope your trip turns out really great.

Thanks so much and continue to enjoy your trip.

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. How cool to stay in your childhood home. Thanks Fran, I love reading about your travels. Looking forward to more posts. Have a great time.

Mick, so glad you enjoyed the post. More stories are building up in my head, so will fill you all in on some more of our travels.

What a wonderful journey! Safe travels!!

Christine

It's been a great trip thus far, Christine. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Hi Fran,

I don't know that part of the country but I always wanted to see the fall leaves!

I am so glad you got the chance to go to your old home! I love good scallops and those sound delicious!

I look forward to your next update.

Jessica

Thank you, Jessica. We saw a little more color today, traveling north to Maine. I think it's just been unseasonably warm here, too, as it has in Alaska. Hopefully we'll see more color in two weeks. We will for sure have a Maine lobster!
