Make A Plan For Success

I am sitting in the airport in Juneau, waiting for my flight back to Gustavus. Despite clouds and a little rain this morning, I made it to Juneau, got my errands finished, and am now waiting for my flight home. It's always a relief when something works according to plan. It is always wise to make a plan for success.

Speaking of plans, how well do you do, following a plan? Are you able to map out your day successfully? How about for longer periods of time?

How do you build your plan? If you have a deadline to meet, what steps do you take to be sure you reach your goal? Here are some suggestions that might help you.

First of all, write down everything that you need to accomplish to complete your plan in the time period available. Write as many details as you can about the task at hand. Don't leave anything out.

Next, think of your timeline and organize all you have to do in the order in which you need to do it. Now you have a little outline that can help you move forward.

Perhaps something you are writing as part of the plan needs a bit of research to give you the depth of understanding you need to complete the job. Make sure to get this work done in a timely fashion, so it will be ready for your use when necessary.

When working toward a deadline, keep your focus on course. Don't dawdle when you have a time limit to meet. Keep yourself on track. If you can, break your tasks down into the amount of time you are allowing to get each item completed.

Be sure to schedule in the times you need to accomplish other necessary jobs. After all, life does go on, and it is important to maintain a balance in your life. Your plan needs to allow you breathing space as you move forward.

If you need to do some writing, find a quiet place where you will have no distractions and can spread all your materials out so you have easy access to everything you need.

When I am writing a post, I research it first and make copies of all the research articles I want to use in my writing. Then when it is time to compose the post, I find my quiet spot, read through all my research, and then write, selecting the references I need.

Though this method may not work for everyone, it seems to, for me. I think it saves me time when I start writing.

Of course, the unexpected can always come up and create its own bit of havoc. Here's where that quality of calmness comes in handy, because you may have to make modifications in the plan to accommodate this new element.

Don't panic. Just regroup and start out again from where you are on this modified road map. Then keep going.

Plan your work and work your plan. Remember, too, if you must spend it waiting for an airplane, use that time to write a WA post!

I've had this post in my inbox since you published it Fran. All I knew was that I wanted to read it. It's taken me till now to find the time to sit down and digest it thoroughly. Well worth the wait. Thank you.
I have to be honest, most of my 'planning' takes place in my head. Occasionally, when things start to veer towards frenetic, I will compile a list. Lists are very satisfying but only when all the items are ticked off, seldom the case, hence keeping it in my head.

Some people can function okay without a plan. I need at least some kind of plan, and for short-term goals, lists work great. I call my Day-Timer my "brain" because I'd forget everything that was in there without the book to look at...or at least I'd forget too much of it.

Great post!
It is always easier for me to plan my career so that I do not lose myself in all my projects. The deadlines and the lists that I make help me to progress faster and more efficiently.

Ingrid

You are right, Ingrid. I live by lists. I'd be lost without my DayTimer. My plan leads to lists and my lists lead to action.

Your method sounds great Fran. Thanks.
Sometimes my issue is finding that quiet place. I believe I'm going to need to leave the house for quiet.

Ah, yes, I know the feeling. At least I am alone a lot, so unless the cat is yelling, I have no problem.

Thanks Fran, I recently made a decision to spend more time in WA and I really feel very good. I also have a plan to fulfill. Regards!
Claudio

Good for you! Hope your journey is a great one.

Very good post with relevant info for a lot of people here specially the newer ones

Yep, making a plan is something all of us can do.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail and WA gives us A step by step plan to help plus I use another site which Hs good advertising and a plan too, so keeps the focus

Your awesome Fran.
I remember Juneau from my cruise-
Mist, and a gentle rain drizzling down, eagles on trees, wings dripping.
Moss in the forest, creeks tumbling towards the ocean with unbounded enthusiasm...
The ocean, brooding and deep and cold, but with a dash of sunlight here and there to challenge the grey-ness and bring a chipping Coot swiftly over the wave-tops.
:)

That's Juneau, as well as most of Southeast Alaska. It is beautiful and still wild here, which is how I like it.

Wish I'd been around when your cruise landed in Juneau...we could have gone to lunch or visited the museum together, or something. Perhaps I should make a general announcement: "If anyone comes to Juneau, let me know. I'll come meet you."

Great advice Fran. I don't make a plan as such, if I do I am bound to get demands upon the time I planned for.
I just know what I have to do and get on with it as and when I can.

Good for you -- if I don't write things down, I am bound to forget something. I've found that a list of my daily tasks works really well.

My daughters write lists, I just lose them, lol.

FKelso - That is exactly the way I approach my work without the airplane (I gave that part up years ago). Of course I love you plan because it is mine too. Wish you the best.

Well, I can testify that it works.

Airplanes are a way of life in Alaska, because everything is so far away. If you are in a small community you often have to travel to a bigger one to get the services you need...like, in my case, a dentist.

FKelso - In the Air Force, I was stationed at Elmendorf for 2 years. I am familiar with the limited ways of travel with such a vast area with a limited population. In fact when I was there, they were still giving 1/4 tracks of land between Anchorage & Fairbanks if you would live on it and improve for 7 years. Best to you & keep on blogging.
