Building A Website Is A Lot Like Baking Cookies

Today I baked cookies, and in the process, thought about the similarities between baking cookies and developing our websites in WA

When you bake, you start with a recipe. Then you gather the baking equipment you will need -- bowls, spoons, measuring cups, etc. Then you get out all the ingredients, making sure you have everything required by the recipe. You mix it all together, form your cookies, and put them in the oven.

It takes some time for the cookies to be done. When they are, you take them out of the oven, remove from the pan, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

What happens when you build a website? First, you have to choose a theme and a niche. (What kind of cookies will you bake?) Then, you must determine what tools you will need. What structure will you use for your site? Is your website to include blogs? Will it be an online store? Do you know what kind of products you want to offer?

Build your structure and create posts (mix ingredients), building out with the theme you have chosen. Research to find topics you wish to write about within your chosen niche. (Read the recipe carefully.)

You need to offer a nice choice of informational posts to your audience (form your cookies.) Once you have everything completed -- content including images -- you are ready to publish.(Bake those cookies.)

Remember, like the cookies, it will take some "baking time" for your audience to grow and appreciate what you offer. Just like with the cookies, once the baking is done, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Will you bake those cookies again? Perhaps you don't care for the taste. Perhaps you feel these cookies will not be enjoyed by those who eat them.

With your website, be alert to the total impact you will have on your audience. You can change your website recipe if need be, just as you can change the cookie recipe.

If you are not pleased with your results, there is nothing telling you that change is not permitted. Growth is change, and as your business grows it will change over time, perhaps in ways that will surprise you.

Perhaps you will make up your own recipe, modeled after another successful one, but with your own individual twist to the mixture. Enjoy your process. Yes, it is work, but like the cookies, when you are finished you can look with pride on a successful creation.

Tasteful analogy, Fran.(Sorry, I couldn't help it)
Seriously, your step-by-step analogy was very helpful for all of us ; both old timers and newbies.-Especially for the old timers, I think. We get in a rut and can't seem to get out of it- Thanks for the push. Happy Easter!
Barb

Haha, Barb! You took the words (cookies?) right out of my mouth! Hope you have a Happy Easter!

To our health,
Karin 😎

And thanks for the comment, Barb...Happy Easter to you too. Yes, we all get in a rut now and then. These blogs give us many helpful pushes.

Excellent analogy, Fran.
I remember one of my sisters making cookies when she was about 8 years old and mistaking salt for sugar. Being a greedy older brother I grabbed the first one. We both learned something that day!
:-)

Oh, my...the things we learn as we grow. Good comparison there, too, to how you can mess up your website if you don't follow the recipe carefully or if you put in the wrong ingredients.

I'd say those cookies were pure spam...lol...

Hmmm ... Spam out of a tin is far nicer than my sister's cookies that day.
:-)

Really enjoyed your post, Fran, and the way reated the two processes, so many similarities thank you for the food for thought.
Alex

Good summation -- food for thought -- I like that very much.

Fran, a great analogy. Love your cookie images.
Thank you for sharing. Keep the momentum going

I guess that means "keep the oven hot."

Lol

Great analogy.

Thanks much!
