Shiney Object Syndrome!

Do you still get hit by the shiny object syndrome?

Before I went away for a short holiday I was hit once again by this syndrome. You know the one where the grass is always greener on the other side. Of course as usual it blew up in my face!

When I was away I had a few computer problems and could not connect to the internet as often as I would have liked. So not only did the new shiny object affect me but also my WA rankings dropped by 4000+.

Now back at the helm I am trying to get fully back on course with my WA work and bring a halt to the plunging figures.

You would have thought I would have learned by now that a shiny object is just that, but being impatient I am always, (wrongly as it turns out), trying to take a short cut here and there and ending up further back than I would have been just following the plan.

So from my observations, my advice to all is, to follow the system in the correct order. Don't try to jump ahead and also to ignore any shiny objects you may come across.

Hi, Derek,

You're funny, lol. Great post. I'm happy your back on track. Becky

Thanks Becky.

Derek

Shiny objects can be alluring indeed. For a beginner when the pieces in the zigsaw puzzle do not fit together and when the traffic does not pick up despite doing pretty much everything, the mind gets clouded with feelings of doubt and cynicism. That is when we become most vulnerable to these shiny objects. Picture this. All this while you had been trying to promote WA and almost all your blog posts are optimised or configured towards this. But when referrals do not happen, you begin to ask yourself whether it was wise creating a whole site towards the promotion of a single product (WA in this case). Is it not akin to putting all your eggs in one basket? Should we not be pursuing other schemes too, you know, to buffer the "risk"? There are two ways: one, you follow a straight line and ride in a single bus; two, you change buses and throw yourself into different environments on the way. The destination is the same. The irony is, you realise that the object you had been holding on to dearly is a shiny object only after it becomes wasteful. It is not always easy to distinguish between a shiny object and a non-shiny object in business. Having said that, it pays to be cautious of any distraction in our journey and to analyse properly whether it indeed is a shiny object or not. Thanks for the caution. Cheers!

Oh so true!

Hi! Derek, Great information. for me Shiny Object Syndrome is not really fatal. I like the way you posted it. Good for those who can follow SOS and know how. Mostly everyone has that syndrome, as human we love to think of beautiful and more success in our life. So easy to think and talk, But hard to do it w/ commitment into it.

First , you make your good decision, follow with action , make your goals, keep going, finish what you had started, make it happen, don't just abandoned it before start a new one.
"No Return No Surrender"

It happened to me, what I did, I follow my idols, I ask how they become successful in their life, I get involve with and follow their advice. I do work more better.

Now, I starting the network online to promote my business, I need more patient and work more harder. Once, I succeed ( I know it will happen) , that's my another Shine.

Thank you for sharing idea. God bless, - Lulu

Yes Lulu, it is something many of us have to fight against if we are to become truly successful.

Derek

Thank you for the advice!!..shiny objects can be alluring ..

Too far alluring sometimes.

Derek

I think we all have gone through that Phase.

Thanks for the comment.

Derek

Thanks for your post. I have experienced this myself and am working hard to stay focused. I tend to get anxious and want to speed up the process and that is when I am most vulnerable to SOS.

Yes Gina, it can be very hard to stop yourself from looking at those shiny objects.

I am an authority in the shiny object syndrome department. New to internet marking and looking for info 8 or so years ago I found myself immersed with emails to attend webinars - always referred to as training in one form or the other.

Even though I don't think webinars are nearly as popular as they were 6 or 8 years ago, I still get invites, and generally decline.

But before I started declining I was in the middle of one of the hardest addictions to break I've ever been involved with: the shiny object syndrome.

I have spent thousands of dollars on programs, trainings, software, plugins, just about anything one could image. Always thinking it would help me make money online.

The addiction came in the form of — substituting working on my websites and business — for making purchases.

It's the same addiction I see people falling into here on the chat board. Substituting working for something easier.......It's actually the same shiny object, just cheaper.

Here's what I've learned:

Never ever ever buy something for my business that I don't intend to stop everything I'm doing until I master the use of it.

Be very careful that the TIME I spend on the computer during working hours is used for only one purpose - to make money. If it's not towards the end result of making money I am substituting working at my business with playing like I am working on my business.

Well said.

Derek

Wow! thanks for this , i really love this advise, thanks for sharing.
