My question is this:

I have a website for a small business I started, but it is not "my" website. It is a tool provided to me by a parent platform, but it is still my own

Yes Fae,

You can definitely purchase a new name-friendly domain name and transfer your information from your old site to your new site.

If your old site is a WordPress website then there is a really easy method for transferring your website from the old site to your new site hosted on WA web servers.

Here's a tutorial to show you how: This is the SAME plugin I use for backing up my sites, so you may want to keep it installed for that purpose too.

However, if your old site is NOT a WordPress website, you will need to copy and paste your pages and posts over, making sure to install redirects in your old website so that when your old website is visited, the visitor's browser will push them to your new website.

Depending on the type of site you have as to the type of redirect code you would need to install.

If your old website is using WordPress, then you can find help in tutorials provided here at WA. See screen print below to see how to access them...

But... if your old website is NOT using WordPress you will need to discover what to use for redirecting your old site to your new website.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Triblu,

I got it somewhat figured out, but there is one more part I can't figure out. So I bought a domain name called www.faesdropshop.com and I redirected any traffic that goes to that to my business website but I want to "mask" that name and have the address in the search bar show as "www.faesdropshop.com" and not "https://shop.dumpling.us/faek16"...which is the website name provided to me from another platform to be used as a tool. I hope that makes sense? Is there a way for me to do this?

The best thing you can do is literally move your old site's content to the new site and place a redirect on the old site.

If the old site was "provided to" you then technically they could simply shut that site down anytime they want to, which is NEVER a wise idea to use such a platform.

Noticed the site that has been provided to you is NOT a WordPress CMS. In guessing, I have provided you with a means of being able to move your content... hopefully easier than copy and pasting.

I want to be able to give a customer the option to choose between a digital download or a physical copy of a product in the same product post but I can't figure out how to do t

You may just have to set up two different pages for the different products. I don't know of anything that will give you the options you are looking for.

Maybe contact woo commerce and ask the question to them ?

Contacted WooCommerce and got it figured out! There is a way to do it using variations feature. Thanks! :)

Great news well done

book and ebook by their very nature are 2 different products. I sell both on one of my sites. I make it clear in the title that its a book or its the ebook.

Mel

I understand what you are saying...but what I want to be able to do is offer both in the same product listing but with different pricing associated with each option.

A couple weeks ago I had asked some advice and now I need help again. I will try to keep this brief, but I am at a serious loss how to proceed and I am hoping someone can poin

Doesn't sound like you'll ever get any service from that guy. Hosting for $150 forever? He got your money and now moved on to the next person.

Get stuff moved into WA, learn to build it (you can do a lot of the basics yourself with the training), and start again. Sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately there are a lot of bad guys out there who take advantage of people who are overwhelmed by it all.

Hang in there!

Thanks! Yes ...working on getting it moved to WA and hopefully restore from a back up. There is a LOT of hours and work on my part already put into this site that I am praying I do not have to redo!

Hi Fae,

So the site is currently down?

Why not just host it here on WA? Instead of all the other host issues. I'm currently running a team of web-developers however for almost 30 years I did software and web development.

I will do my best to help you get your site restored. I would suggest you get it here on WA.

I have all the abilities to host my personal sites on the AWS platform. But I don't I use WA who is on AWS by the way.

The reason is they have sorted out all the WordPress Tweaks which offers a more robust site.

Let me know if I can help.

P.S. Guys who operate like this, don't stay in business very long. They haven't learned the importance of Customer Satisfaction.

Hi Glen,
Thanks for the response!

I am probably going to move my site to WA. I have sent a message to Site Support to get their help in this matter.

It is so hard to know who you can trust anymore :(

I am just thankful I have Vaultpress so I have a backup to restore from or I would have lost a site that cost a little chunk to have built (which I am sure I probably paid a bit more than I should have)

I hope I can get this resolved soon!

Fae

I hope so too Fae!

It angers me when I see people taken by shysters like this.

If there is anything I can do to help please reach out.

- Glen B

Since this is a website & hosting issue -- suggest the best route might be to initiate a service request through the Help Center >>Site Support and provide them with all your details to obtain professional assistance for your website ... hope it gets all sorted out as quickly as possible for you ... 😊

Thank you for the response. I did send a message to Site Support..hopefully they can help me resolve this quickly!

I have been taken! So here is my story and I hope someone can help me as I am so upset and no clue what to do!

I paid a guy to build a website for me for a home craft b

The first things I'd do is make sure you still own the domain (I assume you do, but if he's shady, maybe not). Go to https://www.whois.net/ and type in your domain name. Look at the owner info (don't panic if it doesn't show you as many people choose to anonymize their info so it may show the hosting info but it's still a good place to look).

I'd also try calling Bluehost and telling them your story and see if they can at least tell you why the site is offline....If the domain is hosted with them they should be able to verify the owner is you if you provide your info and that's what they have on record. You don't own the account but you do own the domain. They may be willing to help you at least get your backup or maybe even fix the issue. My gut feeling says this guys account was suspended for either breach of some rule(s) or non-payment.

Those are you best bets for immediate action. Once you get your site back up or at least the backups I'd strongly consider moving it to a more reliable setup. Is the site a Wordpress site? If so, move it here to WA. I'm not sure what back end plugins and services are on your site but, if you're not tied by one of them to the current host, then you should be able to move it easily.

Sorry to hear of your issue and I hope you get it resolved soon!

I just called Bluehost and they told me I need to have my website guy unassign my domain from his account and then I can assign it to my own account that I have with Bluehost. When I asked my website guy to do this, his response was that all I needed to do was change my DNS setting from where I got the domain. I bought my domain here at WA. I have no clue how to do what he is telling me I should do. Any advice or help? I just want my site back up! :( This is so frustrating!

Thanks!

If Bluehost told you to have him unassign it then there's a button or options somewhere in Bluehost to do so. My guess is it's under the domain management area.

Reach out to them again and ask them how he is to do that so you can contact him and have him go through the steps.

Sorry you have so many hoops to jump through but I'm not a Bluehost client so I can't look in my account and see how it's done.

Sorry.

I think he knows how to do it but for whatever reason is just not wanting to..I don't know. But I went into Bluehost to see if there was a way I can do it without him. When I put in my domain, I got a message that the domain is registered to another account and to get it assigned to my account, I need to verify ownership with an EPP authorization code which needs to be obtained with my current registrar. I purchased the domain through WA..so are they still my current registrar? Even though I transferred the domain to another host? And if so, how do I go about getting the EPP code?

So if the domain was transferred then no, it's no longer at WA. If it was simply pointed to their name servers then it may still be here. One way to check is to go to Websites>Site Domains here on WA and then see if the domain is listed here still. You can then click on the settings tab and select Name Servers to see if it's pointed to another host. If it is here and you actually want to transfer it then you can click on that same settings button and select Transfer Domain. You can then unlock the transfer lock option and have the EPP code e-mailed to you.

If, as I suspect, it's no longer hosted here at WA then you will need to get the EPP code from the guy that's currently hosting your site.

If you are the owner of the domain (hopefully!) and not him, you should contact the Bluehost support for help.

Are you able to log in at all? If you can get the back-up it should be good to get it back up, but I don't know about the domain name though. If you don't have access and he isn't giving you information to get in, then you may have to call your domain name provider and explain the situation, they may be able to help you get your name back.

No..I can't log in at all. When I go into Wordpress, it tells me the site can't be accessed. I do have a paid plan with Jetpack for backups and such so I have contacted support to see if they can get me the files. I asked my website guy if once I have the files, is that all I need to move my hosting to somewhere else and he is telling me yes...is that correct?

Yes getting the files should be enough to get your site back up.

I was messing around with some plug ins the other day and then I went and visited my site and it looked liked what you see in the picture I attached. The menu bar disappeared

Loes knows!! Listen to her.. but you already got it!!

Tried and True

Elaine

Thanks! I found the culprit...it was a plugin!

Fae

Send it to Site Support they are wizards at fixing mistakes :)

Seen that, been there, support had to jump in
And yes, I was messing around with plugins too.
Not anymore though

Usually happens when HTML got nested inside other HTML so that the closing tags were interrupted/broken. I'd start with the last plugin you worked on a systematically turn them off to find the culprit.

Any idea what may have happened here?
