In particular, do people think they are helpful for getting customers to stay on your site longer?

I really like the look of them, and think it looks like a great way to showcase content, but I'd love to hear from anyone else who has used them or has experience with them.

Thanking you in advance for the advice :)

Personally I like them, because of the amount of information you can get in a limited space, plus you have room for ads, etc. I am now preparing three sites using this format...Let's see how they come out! I am using a magazine theme that is responsive, meaning that they all will appear properly when users come by using their cell phone or pad...Real important, since about 40% of people look for stuff using these, and also because Google may otherwise not put on the first page from what I have heard...Just makes sense in any case for me, because I want to reach the widest audience possible....

What theme would you recommend?

There are two I am playing with....Both are free (nice), and at the end of the day I will choose the one that works the best for presenting the information...One is mh-magazine-lite and the other is mag-theme ...

You can download mh-magazine lite here: https://wordpress.org/themes/mh-magazine-lite/ and how to set up is found here: http://www.mhthemes.com/documentation-mh-magazine-lite/...

The second is here I think (not sure if it was this site or another one, but both have it?): https://colorlib.com/wp/free-magazine-wordpress-themes/ This site also has a bunch of other free ones to check out...

Good Luck!

Yeah, I like them for that reason too. I'm going to look at the themes you're playing with :)

I think they can look great, particularly if your niche is one that lends itself tomlots of great images. I did consider one for my site, but figured there's only so many times a reader can look at photos of cash and credit cards :/

I personally like them, just so long as the layout is usable with the kind of site you have in mind. With some themes there isn't much you can alter, so it's best to play around with a few on your site before adding a lot of content and see if it fits with what you envision your site to be like.

thanks Sherlock :)
You're so right about playing with different themes. Some are so much more user friendly than others, and the free versions of some are highly customizable while others arent.
