Is anyone using Amazon S3 in their business?

I'd very much appreciate your help in understanding how it works & what the different uses are. Despite reading their pages & googling for clarification I still have trouble understanding it all, getting my head round it. All their terminology, all their different pricing options & trying out their so called "simple monthly calculator" is like trying to read a different language!!!

I am trying to figure out the best secure & minimal outlay way to deliver digital & video products to customers, special offers to followers, etc...

I've noticed many internet marketers use their services, most noticeably for their customers to download their material/offers. I take it settings can be set as to who can access?

I assume there are other good uses - but what are they?

How do you find them as a service provider & their pricing?
Did you use their free usage tier? How far does that stretch?

Although I don't understand how they charge I noticed that there is no mention of bandwidth or is it that they call it something else?

Many thanks in advance for your guidance :)
Brigitte

S3 is incredibly confusing, and their documentation is atrociously hard to follow. If you're just starting out take a look at Easy Digital Downloads. It's a plugin in for WP. It's free. And you can buy addons as you need them for things like S3. Let me know if that doesn't help.

Hi Cory

Thanks for the Easy Digital Downloads tip, looks interesting. It might come in handy down the road. Do you use it?

From what I can tell it's basically a shop front (ecommerce platform) which can handle the sales process, facilitate the delivery to the customer but not the storage of files. All the extra add-ons are basically a way to communicate with the other service providers & they add up!

Anyhows, sadly it doesn't answer my question re using Amazon S3. Any other thoughts?

Many thanks

I actually just bought the extension package and I'm about to set it up on a website, so I don't know the specifics about how it all works yet. The reason I brought it up was that out of the box I'm pretty sure it allows you to just upload your digital files to your media library and serve them from there. I would assume it would protect the links, so that they can't be shared but I haven't dug into it yet. If you're just starting out this would let you get started making sales and then buy the S3 addon later if the server load became a problem. The only addon I would think you'd absolutely need right away is a payment gateway like PayPal.

S3 doesn't necessarily protect your content. I've downloaded plenty of files directly from S3 links. I haven't used it directly though so I can't really give you any other information on the ins and outs if you need to start using it immediately.

EDD does look good, let me know how you find it.

My issue is not being able to upload the files to the media library as we can only upload files to a maximum of 8mb, hence me looking into Amazon S3.

Many Thanks Cory for your ideas.
