I use WPForms for my contact form.

Since I've added a contact form to my sites I'm getting ridiculous spam messages such as "we've hacked your site, pay us and we won't do anything", "get backlinks through us", etcetera.

Is there a way to stop this constant spam? It's driving me nuts! 🤪

Thank you all in advance ☺️

Melissa

Hey Melissa,

After trying unsuccessfully using Honeypot plugin, I removed the contact form (deleting an unnecessary plugin!) and then did this: Hope you find this helpful.

If you can't use Askimet for whatever reason you might consider switching autoresponders. I use AWeber. It is a monthly charge that you may not be ready for yet. But I get very little to no spam on all three of my sites.

Laura

Also, do you have the "anyone can register" box unchecked under settings then general? Just a thought.

It's not for an autoresponder. I don't have one yet because as you said, it's a monthly charge that I'm not ready for yet.

It's the contact me page that I'm talking about.

I do believe that I have that unchecked but I'll check.

Thanks for the info, Laura ☺️

Hi Melissa;

I don't know much about Akismet, but I do know that Kyle doesn't recommend it. And you don't need another plugin with the WP contact form.

I use WPforms Lite, too, and I had the same problem until I set up and enabled the Captcha feature. It's available on the free version of the plugin.

They also have the Honeypot technique, but even with that activated I still had issues until I set up the reCaptcha. Now, I don't have any spam from my contact forms at all. Before I had a ton every day.

When you're in the plugin settings, there's instructions to set it up. Just don't forget to do the enable part at the end or it won't work. I made that mistake first time.

If you do it and have problems feel free to contact me and I'll try to help you out with it.

Best,
Stella :-)

Hi Melissa
Install a plugin called Akismet and it will block virtually all spam messages

Cheers
Dave 🙂

Thanks, Dave

I didn't think that plugin would work with contact forms since the message gets sent to my email and not onto the site like comments do.

I thought akismet was only for help with comments.

You'll still get an occasional one but it blocks virtually all the junk messages

There's a plugin called Akismet Anti Spam which is made for this purpose.

It's free, you just have to install it and set it up in order for it to work properly.

It will block out 99% of spam without you having to go through each comment and see which one is spam and which one isn't.

Thanks! I've heard of and seen the plugin but I didn't think it would work through the contact form since that's a message that gets sent directly to my email.

Your welcome!

Yeah it blocks more than just the contact page. It's really efficient.
