Hi, I just got an email to say my wordpress site had been updated and now I'm getting a message about a plugin failed that I'm not sure I even have [tinymce]

So I'm on google and reading we need another plugin to disable wordpress updates? And that these auto updates could break people's sites? Another option says go into settings in wordpress and there's a disable updates manager - hm, I'm rumaging around in here and can't see it?

In the past I remember having to choose them manually and that WA used to wait till they were stable first before offering them. I'd at least like the chance to backup my site before an update, which auto update doesn't give. And I don't know if the message I got is significant

"Failed to load plugin past from url [mywebsite...tinymce...]

Moz,
I received the same email. It doesn't appear to have changed anything, and they only did it to one of my sites, not both. hmm.. although it now tells me to update my theme.. I know that will delete any changes I made to the header, so probably going to ignore that.

I wish I could remember exactly how I did it for my WA promotional website, but I was able to disable all automatic updates by just selecting a check box in some settings page.

Like I said, I don't remember where, but I definitely did not need a plugin to disable auto updates. If I can remember or figure it out, I'll let you know.

That would be nice, I saw instructions on google saying that option existed but just could not find it in the site..

Most minor updates are to fix security issues. A lot of people had their sites hacked because they didn't update from 4.3.1 to 4.3.2 and from 4.3.2 to 4.3.3.

The default setting is for minor updates (the third number) to be automatic and more major updates (the first and second numbers) to be manual.

It's a good idea to regularly backup your website "just in case".

Thanks for the training on full backup Marion, that's really great!

So you mean that they won't auto update for major updates, but invite us to do that?

So many people have reported problems tonight that it does seem like waiting a few days for stability would be nice option too. Thanks for the clarification on major minor.

I've spent last 30 minutes trying to figure out how to turn off automatic updates on a Wordpress site this in not hosted by WA.
I prefer to update myself not auto updates.

Thanks for asking thequestion. I need to follow some of the links suggested to you.

I found this page helpful, but will also be asking site support to see if they can stop it on their end.

two options, code or plugin, good luck!

Thanks Moz! Code won't work for me, so I'll have to decide whether I should just accept the updates and not worry about it or install the plugin.

Good luck with your site.

Take advantage of that 24/7 Word Press support button that's available to all of us within the SiteRubix platform.

It isn't all that clear but I think it is saying that a plugin in necessary [wasn't clear which one], unless site support are going to deal with it -which I think they were doing in the past, but I think I saw there is a new site support now or something.

When I googled it myself I was told a plugin was necessary [unless you want to use code] for this, so this would confirm it - I hadn't wanted to add an unnecessary plugin. Thanks.

The name of the plugin is Jetpack by WP.

I so then better forget, this plugin is not welcome at WA hosting.

Thanks, but haven't used it yet. I am very weary of un-necessary plugin.

Hey Moz,

Personally, I would disable the plugin and go to their forum: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/tinymce-advanced and explain your issues being sure to let them know the version of WordPress that made their plugin fail.

You could contact Support to have them disable your WordPress updating automatically here at WA.

However, if your site is hosted elsewhere, you'll need to go through your cPanel or FTP access and simply uncheck the option.

define ( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false );
