I was considering creating a online store to expand my internet portfolio. I heard that Shopify was a great place to start a store as they take care of all the basics for you. I was wondering if any of our members have any experience with Shopify that they are willing to share.

Thank you! Kevin

I love the platform, don't feel restricted at all with design or development, and overall very happy. The downside is Shopify will almost always side with the buyer in a Chargeback dispute.. usually from my manufacturers not requiring signature when they ship.

I operate a $400K yearly sales revenue store, telling you not to brag but to justify my knowledge

I've also custom designed and built 20 plus other Shopify stores.

Feel free to ask me anything!!! Happy to help :)

Sarah, would you mind looking at my Shopify site at https://pksinternetstore.com ? I'm getting a lot of traffic but no one's buying. I'm wondering if I could do something better to get my conversions up. Thank you in advance.

Have you tried to do a mock purchase just to make sure all goes as it's supposed to? That seems to be the biggest issue in the Shopify groups I'm in. Make sure the checkout process goes smoothly.

My issue is TIME. Money is never an issue... although we do have cash flow problems sometimes. How much time do you spend weekly managing your store?
Reply
Andrea881 Premium
I spend quite some time as I constantly update things as make sure all runs smoothly. If cash flow is not a problem you might want to consider getting a VA or somebody from up work to manage the more mundain stuff...I haven't done it yet as I'm too much of a control freak but I will have to do it eventually. I shave lots of friends in ecommerce and internet marketing that hired VAs that way.

If you really want a beautiful eCommerce Store, you could never go wrong with Wix !

Does Wix offer a built in SECURE e-commerce facility with cart and checkout free ?

I like shopify as it is very easy to use for total beginners. Though when it comes to creating a menu, there is a bit of a hassle.

All design is mobile friendly and easy to navigate for new store owners. However, free themes is limited and shopify theme can be a little uniformed and do not allow you to stand out from your competitors.

Are you in the drop shipping business? Or you own the products that you want to sell?
Reply

I will be planning to be in the drop shipping business. I joined Amazon Associates and built an a store, however, due to the fact that they have not moved to SSL with their astore I cannot get it to load correctly on my SSL website. I have checked within WA for answers and on the web and while there are some workarounds nothing that I like. It also seems that Amazon is not helpful and tells us they do not support WP.

Hmm.. sound like having you own online store will be better than dealing with Amazon.
Have you giving any thoughts on Woocommerce? Its a plugin that is free but can safe you from many hassles.

Yes, in fact, I have installed Woocommerce. When I had heard how easy setting up an astore was after joining Amazon Associates I figured why not try this first since I have no real experience building and operating an eCommerce store. However, as I mentioned I am having problems getting the astore to load on my site. The only alternative I think would be to turn SSL off and I think that's going backward.

Perhaps I need to step back and go back to creating my eCommerce store on my website.

That a good idea, but like I said earlier Weebly is a very good alternative to Shopify and an Amazon astore.
Best of luck and don't give up even when time get rough!

I have several Weebly stores and I have taken several clients from wix. Weebly also has an SSL issue. I have even more Amazon websites. There are plugins that fix the SSL issue and Marion Black has a workaround for the a stores that is great.

I have two programmers who handle all of my woocommerce stuff. I only used it in my book store but I have several clients that I manage that have woocommerce installed. We are even investigating that new woocommerce feature for paying up-front deposits.

No I have not but I know some real experts that are making 100s of 1000s a year using shopify and facebook but in a specific way - more details later as I learn more -

I saw a webinar on that and it cost $1500 to $1,800 to get started in that program. Which for the income you would generate is not a problem at all however you are limited to one source for getting your products.

I had an excellent experience with Shopify Kevin. Only challenge is the monthly fee. I built a Shopify online catalogue for a client. He quickly wanted to ad online purchasing and it was a simple flick of the switch. The Freight facility was also a simple process. I liked it.

I asked a similar question only two days ago. I set up my Shopify store the day before yesterday under the 14 day free trial but my products are still in the developmental stages so I was advised by Shopify staff to "PAUSE" my store until I have my products ready. In that way, I won't be charged the fee asciociated with maintaining my eStore. Nevertheless, In the near future (VERY NEAR) future, Jay will be holding a Shopify webinar in which WA members can receive some very awesome tips! (Since all of Jay's training are awesome). Hopefully, you can receive some great advice too or hear about some great Shopify experiences.

I just started setting up a Shopify store. It has been a good experience so far as they have videos and documents that walk you through nicely. Last night, I scheduled a 20 minute block for them to answer questions, but by the time they get to me I hope to have most figured out. At this point, I need to clarify the shipping costs as the margins will be lower than if you were doing everything yourself. If you are like me, and wan't more of a hands-free type of set up, it gives you the opportunity to work more on product creation and less on IT.

I think of it like an order & customer management software platform that oh yeah let's you have a website too!

The all in one convenience is key for me, and saves me my most valuable asset, TIME.

I have dropshipping physical good stores and print on demand t-shirts sites with them.

I put together a 'demo Shopify store' a few months back to help illustrate many of the optimizations and strategies that I enact.

Feel free to take a look, hope it helps you all:

Shoot me a message if you ever get stuck.

Hey Kevin
I tried using Shopify to build an e-commerce store. The support with them is great. The problem is that I found the platform restricted in some ways.

I was unable to customize the product with additional features unless I purchase an app. The problem is that I could not try out the app as a trial before buying.

Anyways, to cut the long story short, I following the Word press route and starting building using a Siterubix site.

Boy, was things so much easier and I managed to build everything for FREE. The one thing that I paid for was a domain name which I bought via Site domain.

Hope this helps.

Roopesh

We use WordPress here. Just add WooCommerce plugin and voila you have a store.

Shopify has a similar interface but there is a learning curve to it just like wordpress. There are also features in the background to track sales. A business can work from just Shopify if you like.

I found the platform to be cumbersome and hard to get a good visual result.

Hi Labman, who collects the payment on woocommerce?

You use a payment processor. Paypal is often a good choice.
