I know permalinks should never be changed but I've just published a post and the url is too long. I still haven't submitted it to GSC or Bing so I wonder if I could change it in this early stage.

Good Morning Lenka,

I think it depends on 2 things. If it is a while ago you published and have visitors already then it is not a good idea.
How do you have your settings? Do those bots crawl your website every day? then I would think you should do it the same day as you publish. If you have the setting on once a week you would have some more time
I always use the link provided by Pedro as it will tell me when it gets too long. Greetings from the south of Spain,

Hmm! Spare me a moment please --what's a bot that crawls on the website? (psst. I really don't know)

Good afternoon Marie-Rose,

Do not worry, some time ago I did not have a clue either. All this internet language was a mystery to me.
I am sending you a screenshot, it explains it much better than me.

Interesting. So I was prompted by you to dig a little further and it told me there are bad bots that slow down a website, however good bots are needed to index our content.
My other question is --Is there a bad bot blocking that WA has built in and uses?

Good evening Marie-Rose,

I have no idea so I cannot answer your question.
You can ask this question, type it on the Need help Marie-Rose, top of your screen.
If it is not answered you can put the question to the community.

Hello Taetske,
sorry for the late reply! I'm not on WA much and in addition I sometimes don't get notified of replies to my posts or comments.
I got the answer to this topic from Catherine, I was asking immediately after publishing so it wasn't a problem to change that.
Thank you very much for the link! It is very useful.

Hi Lenka,
Sorry for being a ghost for a while. After my surgery in the end of December my body attacked me with a new autoimmune disease.
I really have been very ill . I also went into renal
Failure. I am being treated by 4 different specialist that still don’t clearly know what it is. I pray to be back soon. I am mostly sleeping and in bed. I have lost 40 pounds and have no energy.
I see your posts and today’s I think you can rename. Kyle May give you wisdom. I’m hopeing he can assist. Good luck and just keep going. I’m not sure what’s going to happen with me yet.
My mental status has been very depressed because I was told it was an inherited issue. Thanks to parents that never talked about family past! Take care.

So sorry to hear that, Helena! I would love to help you somehow, I know it is horrible when you don't know what's wrong with you and it's not getting better. I've gone through such stage in my life two times, once when I had intestinal obstruction and I nearly died as the doctors didn't know what was going on. They diagnosed me in the last minute.
Second time I had bad thyroid after divorce and loss of my job and I also lost many pounds. I had to have my thyroid removed in the end.
Now I feel very well and healthy. I believe you will too, be patient and try to think positively. I'm sending prayers your way!
Love

Mm this can be a tricky one as sometimes I feel I have no choice but to change a permalink and it has me scratching my head sometimes because I certainly don't wanna mess with permalinks. But what is sometimes tricky is that I have a product called ........2019 and then in 2020 I feel the need to change the permalink. I think in future I am going to not include a year in the permalink but only in the title as not to mess with my permalinks.

If you just posted and then change the permalink then that is no problem as it would not have been indexed in Google as yet.

I think if done very carefully and thought through you can perhaps still get away with making changes to a permalink like I felt I was forced to in order to change 2019 in the permalink to 2020 but rather not. Definitely does not come recommended.

Thank you, Schalk! Yeah I keep that in mind so when I want 2020 in my title I never put it in the permalink, only in the title or SEO title. But this question I asked because the permalink was too long.
I've changed that when Catherine said it was not a problem to do it before indexing so now I know for the next time :)

I've done it before. I just of back to WP and edit the link at the top of the article. Kyle teaches about making your titles attractive, but how do you say what you really want in 60 characters. Some times, it's impossible.

Thank you Barbara. I was just worried I would mess up and get an error. But Catherine reassured me that if it's not indexed yet there won't be any error.

Yes, she is correct.

The logic and the reasoning why you can change it is it's not been indexed therefore Google will not recognise it as a 404 if you change it

Thank you Catherine! That's exactly what I needed to know (and what was my concern).
