Just a heads up. If you are using the Buddypress plugin, you should disable it immediately. This plugin is poorly optimized and will put a huge load on your actual website, which as you may or may not know, will hurt the customer experience and the rankings in Google. It is a plugin geared towards putting a "forum" on your website. If you are going to create a forum, build an actual forum. Trying to accomplish this through a plugin is never a good idea and there are long standing and highly effective "open source" forum platforms that you can leverage out there. PhpBB being one of them. So, again, if you are using this or plan on using the BuddyPress plugin, I would recommend that you refrain from doing so.

There are many. If you're interested in a membership site. Most of them however will cost. You can find a few free ones if you look hard but typically, you get what you pay for. Your payment will be increased set up time and learning how the free plug-ins work. You may find also that they have limited functionality.

You are not alone Neil, unfortunately this causes most sites to crash. Plugins are the biggest culprits to poor site performance and I don't recommend using ANY plugin unless they are of benefit to your actual site.

Kyle I have read that Buddypress is constantly improved by the Wordpress team it is not a stand alone plugin its fully integrated with Wordpress.

If you say not to use it how then I can build a community on my site if I want to do that? You suggest NING is that fully integrable with my website and does it have all the functions you have with Buddypress?
