Never Underestimate the Sophistication of Your Audience

You do so at your peril.

Today we are connected more than ever so much so that our world depends on it. Having said that many of our intrinsic and inherent values remain relatively constant. A long winded way of saying we all have similar needs at the various phases and ages of our lives.

By default, we are connected to this collective consciousness, it is so pervasive that we do not even have to think about it, from the young to the old just about every hour of our waking day we are connected.

There was this experiment, you put 50 monkeys together and teach one monkey how to do something and before very long every monkey can do it.

When I first started out I had a teacher who said;

" Observe everything the key to success is the realization that you do not have to comment on everything that you see and hear.Sometimes there is no need to enter or win the debate for that matter."

In this version of online marketing we live and die by the success or failure of the content that is produced to reach out and chime with the thoughts and desires of our target audiences. We need to observe what those thoughts and desires are and build them into our repertoire. Literally, our success depends on that ability.

So what separates a successful marketer from someone that is just starting out is the ease with how they implement their particular technical skill set.

When we are trying to get engagement we all need to be mindful of the fact that through this collective connected consciousness that folks are becoming very sophisticated with their levels of understanding. We have to be mindful of that when we are reaching out with our content.

Folks can spot the spammers and scammers and dodgy dealings from 50 miles out, our senses and perceptions are all becoming heightened, we can all spot the fakers.

I may not be the first monkey but I am in that group of fifty.

Having said that we don't get it right 100% but we do get it right enough times to avoid trouble. If we do not get it right or respect our audiences then the only ones we end up fooling is ourselves. That in its self is not a problem but perhaps we will not attain the outcomes that we dream of.

It is a case of being mindful of our audiences, they are after all responsible for the size of our pay cheques.

So true..people are often hindered because they don't think the audience is smart enough to understand. Not so. Thanks. Debbie

You have got it there Debbie at the end of the day we are all consumers at some level and we know what we like and expect, it is just sometimes when we jump the fence and become sellers we can forget what it is like being a customer. Thank you for stopping by.

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public" HL Mencken It was written long ago but I find it true today (Dan Kennedy drills this point often). Sometimes I want my audience to be smarter, different but in the end I lose by over doing my sales efforts. I don't believe people have become sharper. They are still running on emotions. I do believe they smell BS faster and leave immediately. Plus they have no shortage of anything to pick from. I view technology as progressing rapidly but not my audience. Good topic.

That is experience speaking there, Bryant it's all about hitting that balance where there is that sales pitch and the realization of how much is enough.
My take on it is that people may not be becoming sharper but they are becoming more aware of the opportunities that are out there by using the internet it is possible to leverage our positions.
That is so well said, we do all of us run on emotion around those purchasing decisions and a whiff of dodgy dealings and as sellers and promoters, we get punished for it.
I get the points that you are sharing thank you for commenting appreciate it.

Never underestimate your audience, Alex. Better learn, or your audience will teach you are hard lesson!

You sound like one of the form masters from school days kaju, like it, A lesson to become aware of, if the audience is receptive they will reward us positively time and again it is easy to lose their vote of confidence if we do not respect them.

They're getting sharper every day Alex!

We all are Mike, being here and immersed in this wonderful learning opportunity that is WA we are becoming sharper than most.
