I Like The Sound Of My Own Voice, Just Don't Play It Back To Me

One of the great things about WA is that we get the opportunities to push the envelop, I am sure that we all do it, just in different ways I guess. I have been playing around with video, finding it a little hard going to be honest.

I really like to chit chat and don’t mind admitting I like the sound of my own voice, bar for one thing.

Just don’t play it back to me.

I am not sure why but when we hear our own voices played back it sounds like this totally different person.

Voice shock, I think that’s is what it is called.

The realization sets in that my voice recorded and played back is exactly how others hear it, oh no,

It sounds so different because when we speak we are the only ones to hear it if that makes sense the sound that we make is confined to us and our ears.

Apparently it is common, for folks to dislike their voices in the playback situation, when I learned this I kind of felt comfortable in that knowledge. So if others can do it I guess it is a matter of practice, still sounds like someone that you totally don’t know lol.

The thing that resonates, no matter how we sound initially with practice we can get better or change how we sound, I have been practicing saying and recording a simple statement about three times, each time slightly differently. I think I can see where I can improve, practice makes perfect.

Would love to know your thoughts on this and any ways that you use to overcome voice shock and make your voice sound good or at least the way that you are comfortable sounding.

Thank you

Alex.

Oh dear Alexander, what can I say about this one. I know exactly what you mean and you know how I feel about this one as I have said often enough that I keep putting off doing the screencast video for this very same reason.

I know I have to bite the bullet and do it at some point but dreading it at the same time. xxx

I think the first one is the hardest then it gets easier as we go, just a matter of jumping in Cheryl all the best.

Jumping in at the deep end lol. I can speak it in my head, it's just getting it to come out my mouth. xxx

Awesome!

Not sure about that lol. I am more concerned that people won't understand me either. xxx

Yes, I feel the same way. People say my sister and I sound alike, but I don't hear it. I don't know any technique to change the way we hear ourselves...other than doing what you are doing. Have fun with it and best of luck. Debbie

Hi, Debbie, it is one of the life's mysteries, I think that practice helps and also slowing down what we are saying and trying to get the correct pronunciation seems to make a difference as well. It is fun playing around and trying things out currently looking at doing video landing pages a work in progress.

That's funny. Whenever I called home, after a few minutes my mother would say. "Who am I talking to!"

Very common indeed, Alex. I don't like the sound of my played back voice...but evidently I'm not alone. I have practiced also...then I sound more like a wrestling announcer. Ha ! In the end, I think what you are saying matters more than how you perceive what it sounds like to yourself. ATB Carson 1

Think that you have hit the nail on the head Carson, what we are saying is far more important than how we are saying it, so true.

Alex - I think this is true. When played back, I hate the sound of my voice. I ask myself, is this what I sound like. It must be a big turnoff.

I Haven't tried practicing yet, but I think this is what you refer to as pushing the envelope. It's on my list...way down on my list.

Classic Patrick, at least it is on your list of things to do, you might surprise your self when you get around to it. I am surprised a little practice makes the world of difference. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one.

Classic T a blast from the past, well said it kind of grew on you though. I am finding that the more we do this the more comfortable we become on the flip side of the coin I invested in some software that did text to voice just really hard to get away from that machine sounding voice so even at the risk of not doing a good job our voices are probably the best.

Very interesting and true when listening to a playback of my voice I don't like it. I have heard that actors, radio/TV personalities feel the same way. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it and worry about what you say not how it sounds.

John

Thank you for sharing your thoughts John, so true it is all about the message good to be reminded of that will said.

This makes me feel better! I have so far managed to avoid visual and audio and stuck to the old written and power point methods.

BUT... I have got to the stage where I have to stop being 'precious' and get on and deal with the fact that everyone but me can actually see and hear the actual 'me' outside my head on a daily basis!

Scary thought! Many thanks, Sue :)

That is such a good way to put things, Sue, so easy to be precious about things haven't heard that one for a while.
I guess if we can feel like being on the high dive board you either jump or slink back down the stairs.

Have to admit that I've got to the stage where 'slinking' isn't an option (anymore)! Sue :)

Thanks for posting.

Hi, Theodore thank you for stopping by, hope you found the post useful.

I feel the same way, Alex, of not liking the sound of my own voice. I have had to swallow my pride and accept that that is me :))

Scary stuff Carol, I think that you have nailed it on the head I guess it is pride or self-conciseness. hopefully, practice makes perfect. the more we do this online stuff the easier or more second nature it becomes.

I agree, Alex. I guess like with anything, practice is the only thing that will give us the chance of perfecting :)

A matter of self adjustment Alex!

I think that you may be right Mike, one of the things that is sticking out like a sore thumb is that there are quite a few adjustments coming down the line. thanks for the motivation.

I totally CRINGE when I hear my own voice during playback, Alex. I do a Wood Allen, covering my ears and mothing "Beeeepppp!!" to drown out my voice!

Classic Kaju, that has made my day I guess it gets easier as you go or at least I am hoping that it does.

Remember the Woody Allen early 70s fl cks "Take the Money and Run" and "Bananas"?

Well, that is ME!
