Control Things You Can Control

I think you'd agree that sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. We can have the best of intentions, but sometimes we get in our own way and lock in on something that takes us away from our goal. Has this ever happened to you? In times like these, you have to remember to control things you can control, and not let the outside things you have no control over bring you down.

Today I got into a conversation with someone who was upset that another person was breaking the rules in a forum they are both a part of. This is totally understandable. The person felt slighted in that they felt the rule breaker was gaining an advantage by breaking a rule, and even though he had been reported many times, nothing seemed to be being done about it.

Now what would we do in that same situation? Let's say someone marketing to the same target audience we were marketing to was breaking some rules about the way they went about sharing their affiliate links. We'd probably bring it to their attention first, and if they continued, we'd report them, right? Perfectly good way to handle things.

Let's say they didn't stop. Let's say they are reported by multiple people and still don't stop. Do we start reaching out to even more outside people and make it our mission to put this guy on blast? Do we stop our own momentum and step away from our goals just to go after him? Or do we remember to control things you can control and get back to our own goals?

What if we take a look at the bigger picture here. Is this person really gaining an advantage by doing what he's doing? Usually people who are desperately breaking rules do so because they just can't make things work doing things the right way. Normally the "advantage" they have is only a perceived one, and with time they fade along with their reputation.

Control things you can control and press on. Rules need to be followed. But once we've done our part, we can't get lost in things out of our control. Don't let other people's actions take you away from your goals! Don't let negativity affect your positive drive!

When a successful person at the top of the mountain sees another person trying to break rules to get to the top, do you think they lose all their focus and look downward? No. They push harder and distance themselves even further. The will of the weaker person breaks first and they will never reach the top. The successful person presses on doing the things that they know will take them even higher.

Don't lose focus on your own goals by wasting your energy on people who aren't doing things right. It only takes away from your own hard work and dedication. Maintain your focus, press on, keep creating quality content, keep being proactive and driving traffic to your site, keep following the training step by step, keep building a great user experience with your website, and above all else control things you can control and stay positive :)

This could be added to the annuls of the great philosophies of all time. I say it like this:. It is what it is.

It most definitely is what it is, right? Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this article.

Yeah brother. This philosophy of life literally saved my mind over the years (once I figured it out, that is).

Amen to that.

How eloquently put and so true. We do forget ourselves and focus on things we shouldn't and lose our way. You've got to keep your eyes on the prize, you and what you want to achieve.

Absolutely. Always look forward and don't waste energy looking behind unless it's to offer a helping hand.

True, though sadly some people don't want to be bothered to give a helping hand. It's all about them.

I guess it's easy when you're frustrated by someone else to lose focus, but sometimes you really just need to snap out of it instead of trying to convince the person trying to help you how they too should be focused on what amounts to a bunch of noise.

Absolutely true.

Let's get over ourselves and make it happen Eric!

Best advice yet! Always inspiring all over us Big Mike!
