Done with Ebook

Hi, WAers,

Whew! I just finished working on my ebook. Man, it takes a lot of work! Even though it's something simple, it took a lot of time to format, proofread, optimize images, design the cover art, not to mention the technical difficulties I ran into lol. I will use it as a lead magnet for my landing page, which is my next step.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate it if you could guide me a little.

  • What is the best format for an ebook: .doc, .pdf, or .epub?
  • Is there an ideal file size?
  • I'm almost sure the answer is yes, but should I protect it against copying and printing? What is the best way to do this?
  • I created it in Google Docs and then exported it to .pdf to see what it looked like. I noticed the lateral TOC disappeared after the conversion. The TOC page is still there, but there's no way to see it on the side. I was able to do this in GD. At least, I wasn't able to figure this out.
  • I didn't find any option to force hyperlinks to open in a separate tab. Do you know if there's a workaround?
  • Are affiliate links allowed? I found conflicting information about this online.
  • What is the best way to promote the lead magnet? Social media, YouTube, Amazon, Google Ads? Did you start with one and then expanded to others or do you use a combination of them all from the beginning?

Well, that's it for now. I haven't posted anything to my site these days, so I'll work on that now.

Thanks!

Congratulations Enrique!

My first and only Ebook was written and edited using Microsoft Word. To make it an Ebook and also create a paperback, I used Amazon Kindle.

I simply uploaded my MS Word doc and it worked. Choosing the cover was part of the Kindle program. I did not use any in-page images.

Hey, Joe,

Thanks for the tip. I'm still trying to decide whether I should try Kindle or not.

Thanks!

Publishing through Kindle is free except for their commission when you make a sale. Uploading and creating the ebook and paperback were free.

Joe

Interesting. I might give them a try.

Thanks again!

Hi Enrique, I would like to congratulate you on the completion of your ebook. I can just imagine the intensity of such an undertaking.
I would say the best format for an ebook would be a pdf type.
Ideal file size, is that for your completed ebook, and are you talking about a word count.
As far as protecting your material perhaps you may find some information here:

Silvercat69 has made a comment I am sure you will find beneficial. There is also Fran who has given you Sqribble.

You can use affiliate links and link to your product pages at any eBook vendor. However, you cannot reference other vendors. For example, if in your Nook EPUB, you link to a product page for Amazon, your book might not be allowed for publishing via Nook Press. Feb 24, 2015

I think perhaps more research needs to be done here. Chrystopher may have an answer.

Personally I would use the whole arsenal for promotion purposes, plus a few more.

Awesome accomplishment Enrique.

I wish you all the very best,
Michael

Hi, Michael,

Thank you very much. Yes, there is a lot of research to be done.

It seems pdf is the way to go, although I found out that Amazon converts everything to epubs. I don't know about other publishers.

About protecting my material, I wasn't exactly talking about copyright but rather protecting my document so it can't be copied/pasted or printed, but thanks for the links. I'll check them out.

I'm still debating whether I should start promoting on Twitter and then expand or bombard the web from the beginning lol.

Thanks for commenting.

Hi Enrique, I would go ahead and bombard the web from the beginning. Don't forget to also use LinkedIn as they are mainly a business platform.

All the best,
Michael

Well, you have asked a bunch of questions I can't answer. You might be interested in a program I joined...it's called Sqribble...its purpose is to help you create ebooks. I plan to use it...someday...

Hi, Fran,

I think I've heard about it, not sure. Do they have a free trial or how does it work?

Congratulations on completing your e book.

Thanks, Lisa!

Congrats on finishing your e-book. I would think a PDF would be the best format because not all people have other programs, but a PDF is pretty much universal.

I am currently working on my ebook, so I am curious to see what others give as advice.

Hey, Karin,

Yeah, it seems pdf is the way to go. Anyway, it seems that publishers might convert the file to adapt to their policies. We'll see.
Thanks for stopping by.

I received some really good advice from my coach here at WA on doing my e-book. Looking forward to seeing what comes of it!

With 2020 vision,
Karin 😁
