It’s important to clean up the clutter on your WordPress site from time to time. Just like you would clean your house in the spring.

Here is a list of things you can do to better organize and clean up all the unwanted junk on your website so that it’s not only easier to work in which will make you a more efficient webmaster but cleaning your website will also help with speed optimization and make things run more smoothly.

Keeping Your Site Spic and Span

Update Your Plugins

Plugins are a useful part of any WordPress site and they have updates from time to time so make sure you keep up and update your plugins whenever an update is available.

Update Wordpress

Just like plugins, Wordpress comes out with updates from time to time. Make sure that you update Wordpress every time a new version comes out. Doing this will help keep your site running smooth and it will keep it safe from hackers and viruses that lurk on the open web.

Delete Unused Themes

Many times you will have inactivated themes sitting on your website not being used. They don’t need to be there. All they do is take up valuable space on your website. Many people don’t even realize they are there.

To find out if you have unused themes on your site navigate to Appearance on the sidebar of your WordPress back office. Click on Themes. This is the page that stores your themes. Click on theme details on the unused themes and you will have an option to delete them from your website.

Delete Unused Plugins

Delete any inactivated plugins. Doing this helps save data space and also removes clutter from your website.

Delete Unwanted Images

One thing that weighs down a sites speed in a big way are the images you have uploaded. If there are any images that you don’t use or are not needed simply delete them from your website. Doing this will save a ton of data space and speed your website up tremendously!

Optimize your images

Optimizing your images will also help in speeding up your website. There are many plugins to help you do this. The default ones that we have here at WA are EWWW image optimizer and the new servers offer Kraken.

If you would like to know how to optimize your images using Kraken here is a link to a training I did called How to Krak’em All:

Clear Cache & Refresh

Once you have all your housekeeping done you will want to go to your WA dashboard click on websites on the left-hand menu. Click details on the website you have just cleaned and click clear cache button.

Then click back to site manager and hit the refresh button.

Conclusion

Doing these tasks a few times a year is good for the health of your website and you will find your site performs better and just might help a little in boosting your search engine rankings.

I would like to know what other things do you do to keep your website Spic and Span?

Thanks Cory for your post. Being relatively new and then out for the past two months, I probably need to look at my website. However, I plan to go a different route and start over in my training with a new theme and niche, so does it matter to my old website if these things are done or not. My old niche was something that I really enjoyed working on, but I had too much difficulty finding images of the groups that I was blogging about. So I am going to start from scratch.

Take care
Charlotte

I would keep everything updated on your old site if you plan on keeping it.

Thanks

Where is the Click cache button?
