Why building your website is like building your house

Good things take time, right?

We can be impatient with this wanting to make money thing (myself included), especially when we're working our tails off to get sites up and running. Today it came to me that building your successful online business is kinda like building a house.....

Location, location, location!

You've got to figure out your niche, and what your domain name (internet "real estate") is gonna be.

Design

Next, you start planning your site. What does its structure look like? Is it user friendly?

Lay your foundation

Start fleshing out your site with useful content. Steady progress is important (and ask WA if you get stuck).

Build your house

Continue with creating awesome, beautiful, helpful content. Your website will start to reveal its true shape and beauty, and its potential to earn you money will start becoming a little clearer.

If you were building a house, it would take months of careful planning and hard work to get this far. You wouldn't abandon it at this stage would you?! Think of your website the same way.

You're never done

Even once your house is ready for you to move in, there will always be something you could do to it.... change the furniture, do the garden, maintenance, redecorate, etc. It will never be finished. Nor will your site!

The more you put in and the more patience you have, the more benefit you will see in the long term.

Thanks Emily for the info. Sunday Blessings.

Hello Emily thanks for the follow. I love your analogy, and yes good things take time! Best wishes on your websites, your "Healthy Diabetes Diets" post on your weightlossbeginsnow site is excellent. Bookmarked your site, so I'll be checking it out regularly. Awesome job.
Best Regards,
Eric

Thank you :)

Great analogy here, and a nice reminder that success isn't built in a day. It reminds me of one of my favorite Will Smith quotes:

“You don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say ‘I’m going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that’s ever been built.’ You don’t start there. You say, ‘I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid. You do that every single day. And soon you have a wall.”

what a great quote. will remember that one!

Looks like that is going to be a pretty nice house. Carry on.

thank you!

Very good post Emily. You are absolutely right, just like building a house from the foundation up, websites are built the same. Also, just like a house the maintenance is never ending.

thanks larry, hope your house is going to plan :)

Kind of hit a road block with my latest load of lumber and material. I'll get out of this detour pretty soon.

Very good analogy. Of course you are right it does take time and patience and I doubt it's ever done although there should come a time when we just need to maintain it and not sweat it so much - the gardening as you put it. Best of luck to you Emily - I think your site is great- I got alot of work to do yet!

thank you, with time and patience we will all get there! keep on building up that house :)
