I am quite sure many of you are going to be able to relate to the statement "what part of I'm working do you not understand"!

For some reason known only to Murphy and the Greek God's of "But", if you are sitting at a computer you cannot possibly be busy. Sitting at the computer obviously means it's fine for everyone in the family or friends or neighbours, or the dog, or the latest phone scam people to ring you, visit you, ask for stuff, and /or whine.

I know that may sound over the top or even harsh but seriously people, give me a break!

Just because I work my business as a home business does not mean that the pixie's arrive after I go to bed and operate my business, so I am free to do all of the home stuff family and friends require.

Mum have you ironed my uniform for school, have you organised anything for dinner, I will invite Tom from work over because he is by himself and needs a good feed. Gee, love, we better bath the dog she stinks, you aren't busy are you?

Ahhhh yes I am. Can you not see I am sitting at my computer typing away, ignoring you all. Did you not see the sign on the office door, Emergent Marketing Services.

Yes, but you aren't really busy, are you. You haven't made any money yet, so it isn't a real business.

Guess what, it is a real business and you can all cook, clean, iron and bath the dog, yourself. I will not be available at any time while I am in that room with the door locked, unless the house is burning down or someone is dying. Do not enter or knock and for the smart ass with the iphone, no calls either.

cheers,

mum, office manager and business owner.

Yes, it's hard to convince people that you are working when you are "playing" with your computer. Perhaps future generations will get the idea. ;-)

Haha! Good for you, keep at it!

For many years I ran a business based in part of the property where I lived. 10 staff, over 100 regular customers a week, working 12 -14 hours a day... and still people would regularly say, 'you are lucky to work for yourself, you can work your own hours'. What? I worked the hours my customers (and bank manager) needed - within reason!

It wasn't luck, I worked really hard, but the difference was that I loved what I did! What you are doing will be so worthwhile, just drown out the clamour if you can and keep going! Sue :)

Just hang your shingle with your brand over the computer when not in use!

I get this crap from people too! I work a part time job and that's all some of my relatives think I do. I'm a House Husband and Stay At Home Dad who cooks the meals, picks the kids up and operates the washing machine and the iron but I get comments like 'You're at home doing nothing all day' from people who ought to know better.
It is annoying but we can't keep banging our heads against the wall trying to 'educate' these people, as they usually can't be educated!
Cheers

Thanks Rich, You are right you can't educate them. But it is nice to know I'm not the only one. lol. I can't wait until this pays off and I am making an income so I can watch the mayhem and smile knowingly.....lol.
Thank you for the support and encouragement. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Sounds like my house. I need to show this to my wife and kids. No matter how much I say "treat me as if I am at work" I am still interrupted with all kinds of things that I would never hear about if I was at an office somewhere.
