Website Stats - Give your site a health check
I have not been very happy with my website stats recently. I'm not going to lie to you. They seem to be going nowhere.
There's been a lot of chatter about maintaining a content publishing checklist whereby you confer with a checklist to make sure you have everything in order before you press the publish button.
So with that in mind, I started to wonder what I could do to help increase visitors to my site. I started looking through some of my first few posts and was astonished to find that many of them have no external links and internal links.
So I'm giving my whole site a health check. I'm combing through every single page and rechecking against a list THAT I PRINTED OUT to make sure everything is in order.
While you may think you are doing everything right, like me, we sometimes get a little too anxious to press the publish button. I know there were times when I said to myself, "I'm just going to hit Publish and I'll go back and fix it up later." And later never comes because I forgot!
So if you are discouraged about your website stats, take some time out and do the following:
- Recheck your posts. Make sure you've got all your internal and external links in place and make sure they work.
- Do a link check on your entire site. I found 4 bad links when I did this that I have now fixed. Check out this site: http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/
- Make sure your images are still working and that they have alt tags and any necessary links.
- If you have a content publishing checklist, use it to recheck all your old posts. Make sure all your old posts are as great as your recent ones.
As you continue to write content, you will get better and better at it and you will build more confidence. I struggled a lot when I first started writing content. Now I find I am getting into a groove. That comes with time and experience.
So my plan is to spend an hour a day checking old posts. I'll give it a week and see if it helps my website stats. I'm guessing it will help a lot!
