Are You Eating A Healthy Diet?

I know of no one who wants to be more mindful of their diet. Eating is a pleasurable activity, and food enhances our lives in so many ways.

We can eat almost anything in moderation, but what happens when life gets hectic, whether it is raising kids or keeping a household while working full-time, is that we make abysmal food choices.

Our diets often get placed on the back burner, so to speak, in favor of simplicity and ease. Ordering out for pizza, stopping at a fast-food place and picking up dinner, or cooking what is in the fridge can be problematic when you don't take the time to grocery shop.

Can anyone relate to this way of life? I try my level best to eat a well-balanced diet, but seriously, life gets in the way of my plans sometimes. I end up eating poorly, and so does my family.

Making poor food choices might not be a problem for us right away, but it can make a massive impact on our mental and gut health over time. Because gut and mental health are so intertwined, we not only gain weight, but we get depressed, anxious, and moody too.

I would have never thought this would be a problem for my family, but unfortunately, I was wrong. I had very sick daughters who ended up with Celiac Disease.

Celiac Disease causes fatigue, diarrhea, bloating, tingling hands and feet, severe headaches, mouth sores, rashes, and can stunt growth. Celiac Disease and other autoimmune disorders are linked to the controversial diagnosis called "leaky gut."

Leaky gut is caused by an unhealthy gut lining that may be cracked or have holes, allowing toxins and food particles to penetrate the tissue, causing inflammation and horrible gut issues.

A poor gut biome (refers to microorganisms that live in your intestines) can lead to many health problems, all of which are prevented by quality foods that are not inflammation-inducing.

Foods that cause gut inflammation are as follows:

a. sugar and high fructose corn syrup that is in many foods

b. processed meat (think deli meat for sandwiches or hotdogs)

c. excessive overuse of alcohol

d. artificial trans fats found in fried foods, non-dairy coffee creamer, margarine, frozen pizza, shortening used in baked goods, microwave popcorn, to name the biggest offenders.

e. refined carbohydrates such as white bread and other heavily processed foods that may add sugar and other not whole foods.

I am concerned about health because most of us need to look at what we eat. Maybe if we look at our diets and make a small change to start, we can become healthier as we eat better.

I know that I made huge changes after learning more about poor gut health and its long-term effects on our overall health. Maybe by reading this, you may make changes to your diet before it is too late.

We can't enjoy our successes in life if we don't take care of our diet first—sorry, folks.

I have to watch what I eat as well, although for an entirely different reason. Occasionally, we will have a pizza, we have learned that eating a well-balanced meal is much better for us. After surgery, I gained 60 pounds, I now work out an hour each day, sometimes two. I have lost three inches and ten pounds in 4 weeks and am starting to feel great. Great post.

That’s awesome Jerry! Keep it going! I’m cheering for you!

Hi Emarla.
I can Sympathize. My sister has celiac and it has been hard for her. We recently discovered the gut connection and are trying to make significant changes I turned her on to WA recently and she is going to join. She has a lot of down time so worked out perfect for her. How is your training going? Mine is moving smoothly so far. Nice to talk to you. Jjwhite

Thanks for your comments! I wish your sister well as she adjusts to living without gluten. I hope she doesn’t experience being “glutened” like my daughters describe it. They can become so sick when there is cross contamination. One of my daughters used a friend’s toaster and got glutened from that! It can be a struggle, I’m learning. My best to you. Being her sister, you have a 25% chance of triggering celiac disease. I hope you stay well!

My sis was born 3 months premature nearly 70 years ago. Its a miracle she survived at all and the celiac has been there a long time. They are finally making strides in treatment that are working. You wouldn't believe some of the things she was told to do in the earlier days. It has brought home the mortality we all face. We have chosen to make it a motivator to make better choices and demand success for our own . Thus joining WA. Hopefully this will be the change that we are wanting. Thanks for the responses. Let me know if there's anything I can offer if you need it. Jjwhite

Thank you for your kindness!

Emarla,
Great topic! I have done many studies about this topic, and the food industry today has caused many health problems. What the FDA approves to be used for human consumption should be illegal, and the FDA should get sued liked the tobacco industries have. The food industries do not care about feeding people. They care about the money they can make. It is a cycle, we get sick from their foods, and BIG Pharma gets paid for creating toxic medicines to heal people from the sickness of the foods they eat.
Once again great topic, and I hope to hear more about the subject.

Sadly, I forget that often, Erlene!

I must get myself back on track! My friend Kevin is experiencing this now, sadly!

Thanks for the timely post, and have an excellent new day!

Jeff

Great post, thanks Erlene. People don't seem to understand the damage they are doing to gut health with their food choices. We follow Paleo. Best wishes, Jenni.
