Hello WA Family πŸ‘‹

How's your weekend so far? Hope you're all safe and happy. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

Today I am excited sharing my new "toy." Some of you probably already familiar with it.

Since I am thinking about creating a training to be shared here with WA community about Video Pins for Pinterest, yesterday I searched for tools to do a screen recording. I found out about how I can record my computer screen for free without having to download a screen recording application onto my computer. You know there are many shady apps out there that won't be safe to use.

Since I use Windows 10, there is a way I can do screen recording by simply clicking Windows key + G. It will take me to an XBox Game VDR toolbar which is intended to enable gamers to record videos while they're playing games. But hey, even though we are not gamers, we can record our screen too for training purposes AND if you have a YouTube channel for your site, this could come handy. πŸ™‚

So, here is what I learned about it:

1. Not only it can allow you to do screen recording, you can also overlay audio from your microphone on top of your video.

2. When we click your keyboard shortcut key: Windows + G, a game bar shows up. There's a little camera button in the middle that says 'Capture' and we can click that to start our screen recording.

In the old setting (the version before 2020) it won't show little camera symbol but a little red dot to start the recording.

3. Before we do the that, we can check out the setting first. Click on the Gear sign.

Check if everything is all good for our screen recording, like enable mic, show mic recording notification, etc.

Then we can go to Shortcuts to learn all the shortcut keys we need to use during our screen recording session.

The main keyboard shortcut keys we want to remember:

Windows+G to open the screen video recording bar (Game bar).

Windows+Alt+R to Start/Stop the recording

Windows+Alt+M to turn the mic on/off

Next, we can also check out the General Setting then click Edit more preferences in Windows Settings:

On the Windows Setting, click Captures and you'll see this:

You can change the setting according to your needs. The maximum recording length can go up to 4 hours! πŸ™‚

Important: Keep the recommended Audio Quality to 128kbps.

Under that you can also set up these setting:

I changed the video quality into high because I want the video to look nice and crisp. If you choose the video quality as Standard, the video does not look crisp.

I left the Capture mouse checked because it is helpful for when we do training videos so people can follow along where my mouse is.

That's all for the setting. We're all set and we can start recording. πŸ™‚

Where do I find the video of my recorded screen?

By default, it will be saved in C file folder like so:

So that's it. Pretty cool, right?

I saw a training done on this in 2019 (link below) but it shows a different setting, maybe because it's 2020 so I think it is great that I post an update one.

Well, right now I post it as a blog post. I can redo it in the form of video training next? hehe...

What do you think WA Family? Please let me know in the comment section below.

I hope you're all having a wonderful Sunday.

Stay safe, happy and healthy!

NB:

There are so many "toys" out there but make sure we make use of them to our advantages and also be wise with our time.

Don't fall into the "shiny objects" trap.

Thank you for sharing this. I just recently added a Dell with Windows 10 to my arsenal of tools (LOL... in addition to my Apple, hardly an arsenal, but.... it's a start).

I am hoping to do a few training videos myself with the Dell...
Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Karin,

Yay! Same! My computer is Dell as well. All of our laptops and desktop in the house are using Windows 10.

I am glad you found this post useful.

I look forward to your training, Karin.

Have a great week,

Ferra

Ferra, and I look forward to yours!
Thank you again.

Ferra, you are a gem! I was thinking about you turning this blog into a training. Nobody in WA as far as I can tell has written about this method to make videos using ones screen and voice. Can you also add your desktop camera to insert videos of oneself? If you answered this please forgive me as I only scanned your blog.

As always, I have bookmarked it for future reference.

I am so far behind in my blog post goals. That is where my ficus is. I am at 70 posts now. Until I reach 100, I am not going to worry about doing video. But that is where I am going.

Keep up the great work.

Edwin

Hi Edwin,

If your PC has a built-in camera or a connected webcam, you can use the Camera app to take photos and videos of yourself.

I understand what you're saying. I think it will require another camera, a webcam may be, so you can record yourself.

Using this feature that comes with the Xbox Game DVR toolbar, it has a limitation where you can only record 1 screen only.

I'll do more research on it. Thank you for your great question. I am curious too.

Right now I have 78 posts on my website but I am still not confident to do another website or videos on YouTube. I agree with you. Gotta focus on 1 thing at a time.

I will see what I can do about the training hehe... I am a newbie so I am still learning. My husband is an Automation Engineer for Intel Corp., he shares a little bit of knowledge with me about computers. :)

Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment, Edwin.

Ferra

Hey Ferra,

This is really helpful. I've tried a couple of screen recording apps but couldn't figure out exactly how to do it so I had to uninstall them.

I am using windows 10 on my PC and laptop too but while I'm aware of the XBox Game VDR toolbar, it hasn't crossed my mind that I can actually use this to record my screen.

So thank you for sharing.

Hey Alice,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

Glad you found it useful! πŸ™‚ It is nice to find stuff that we already have like this and use it to our advantage.
