I'd recommend you work in a niche you are truly passionate about, there's nothing more dreary than writing content year-after-year about a topic that ends up boring you to tears!

That said, you can certainly research your niche by using the Keyword Tool here at WA to see whether there's lots of targetable keywords. :)

I seem to be passionate about too many niches... and I'd like to find a way to measure which ones might be more "profitable"... for example "family care-giving for people with Alzheimer's" is a broad, deep, and ever growing market--though I suspect people might want "free info" online--while "reining enthusiasts" are a niche niche equestrian competition market--but they might be willing to spend good money to gain an honest competitive edge... just two examples of the top of my head... I could be happy as a clam writing for both markets--but if there were a way to guess which one might generate more success in the long run, I'd be interested in understanding it... besides these two markets--I have at least 8-10 more that I'm absolutely in LOVE with!!! "Niche-itis"--YES, I have it!!!
