Smartphone and iPad gadgets that can detect irregular heart rhythms are being issued by the NHS across London in a bid to reduce the number of people suffering from strokes.

More than 1000 devices are being sent to GP surgeries, pharmacies, and NHS Clinics for patients to take home. An estimated 422,000 people in England have un-diagnosed atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, responsible for one in five strokes. A further million are known to live with the condition, which can be treated with anti-coagulant medication to reduce the risk of a stroke.

The gadgets include the Rhythm Pad, which provides a cardiac screening when patients place hands on an iPad, and AliveCor Kardia Mobile, which is linked to a smartphone app, and in 30 seconds produces electrocardiogram that can be emailed to a doctor.

Ian Clark, 62, from Harrow, was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 2012 and uses AliveCor device to check his heart rate. He hailed 'the very clever piece of equipment' and said 'there's life after diagnosis'.

The NHS said the devices could help detect 45,000 cases of AF in two years, potentially preventing more than 900 strokes and saving £20 million a year.

For those on health and wellness niche, these are potential affiliates gadgets to market either as a health tool, or i-tech one. All the best to you always.

Thanks for this very interesting info!

You are welcomed Dianne.

This is very unique information, and will surely make a good niche idea.

Yes Louisa I believe so, there could be many variation of the gadgets as well. The two mentioned are available on Amazon, and each have their websites, which you can access for more information.

Thank you Lanu......I'm sure these products are available outside the U.K.......do you possibly have a link or two? Or maybe it's software tech (Apps) instead of hardware devises?

Great insights by you.

Wayne

I believe both are hardware, but there could be possibly variation of them all around. Sorry I do not have the link, but both are available at Amazon.

Interesting - thanks for bringing it to my attention. We can not be too careful.
