I Am Frustrated.

Sometimes it happens.

I am frustrated.

I don't know about you but this is how I feel sometimes:

When I read some really good blog post I am excited as I learn great new things, techniques, etc. which I can apply.

But then when I look at my present situation the reality hits me. I am so much behind, there are so many things to do, yet I don't want unlimited amount of time.

And this frustrates me. It's kind like impatience too. People have built their websites for years, studied, worked hard, sweated for years. Yet I would like to get this final product, a polished, well oiled website quickly.

When I consider my situation, there are so many things that I need to do that I don't even know where to start. It adds an extra amount of frustration.

Do Something Else!

There is one thing that I have learned in recent years. I have found that working hard gives me a high feeling of satisfaction. What frustrates me, is when things don't go my way. But then... Maybe I can do something else.

I have another, unfinished project. I had promised to my kids that in Indonesia I would build them a playhouse. Now I am in the middle of the process.

So when I felt frustrated with my website, this is what I did.

I just stood up and walked away from the computer. I went out and continued my wood work.

Working on my playhouse allows me to:

1. Have some physical work, which is good.

2. Take time with my kids. They too like to be with me and play around, give me tools, etc.

3. Think. I can think about my next steps online, website, etc.

So while working on my playhouse I started to think that in fact, good things take time to build. Even if you are absolute top in the world. So much more for me.

At least this is what usually happens.

You don't believe?

Look at these few examples:

1. Many athletes who compete on Olympic Games, prepare 4 full years with a single goal - to compete and win Olympics.

2. Or take Formula 1, no 1 Racing series in the world. F1 long time reporter James Allen just recently wrote in his blog post about the struggling Ferrari team:

"It looks very much as though 2015 will be a transition year for Ferrari as they struggle to close the gap to the benchmark Mercedes chassis and power unit. The latter will probably take longer than the former."

As for the Ferrari's star driver Alonso who is about to move to another team next season, James Allen wrote this:

"As for Alonso, the two-time world champion is clearly weighing up a McLaren Honda offer. It’s a big decision as it’s probably the last move of his career and he needs to be sure that the package will deliver over the next three years, by which time he will be 36."

In the another blog post mr Allen wrote about Alonso:

"Alonso will be looking more at his best prospect for 2016, not 2015, as next year will be Honda’s first year back, while Mercedes is believed to have another step on the power unit to keep it ahead of the field."

Please note that both Honda and Ferrari are BIG players with plenty of cash in hand. Yet both of them have rather long term goals. Their goal is to succeed in 2016, NOT in 2015!

Alonso, Ferrari's current start driver earns tens of millions of dollars per year. His goals at the moment seem to be able to win in 2016 or 2017. NOT in 2015.

Or take Mercedes F1 team. This year they have been pretty much unbeatable. They have played in the league of their own. Yet it took 6 years (six years) for Mercedes to design and build the power unit that has given them all these victories this year.

What do I learn from here?

If REALLY BIG players on our Planet do planning and thinking like that, why do I get frustrated after just less than a year of work?

Then I remembered yet another thing.

Last weekend I took my kids and to our local beach here in Kendari, SE-Sulawesi. The sea was calm and water was warm. Sun was shining and we enjoied our time.

Yet while I was playing with my kids in the water, I suddenly remembered the African proverb from one of my blog posts:

„Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.“ – African Proverb

I was looking at the calm sea and thought:

"Right. If the seas were always like that, how on earth would you become a skilful sailor? Sailors get their skills on stormy seas where wind and waves are against them. It's tough but hard conditions make you strong and skilful.

Still Frustrated?

No! When thinking about these things my frustration disappeared. I got a new portion of motivation and excitement to continue with my website.

Then I login to WA and find davyrobot answering to somebody:

"And remember that Rome wasn't built in a day...but they were laying bricks everyday!"

Great, isn't it? Lay bricks every day and this way you move towards your goals. Steadily.

My Recommendation

If you find yourself in a similar situation, maybe it is good for you too. To stand from computer and do something else. Go, run or swim or work in the garden or... Do something that requires physical activity. Meanwhile your brain can have a rest and you can calm down. You are able to think clearly again and analyze your situation better.

And finally. Don't be afraid of hardships.

„If I had a formula for bypassing trouble, I would not pass it round. Trouble creates a capacity to handle it. I don’t embrace trouble; that’s as bad as treating it as an enemy. But I do say meet it as a friend, for you’ll see a lot of it and had better be on speaking terms with it.“ – Oliver Wendell Holmes

I love the african proverb you posted...and the pictures as well. Frustration is part of learning and growing...it has happened to me many times since I started here. Thanks for sharing!
Hilda

Great post! We all face frustrations and taking a break is what always helps me. Getting everything off of my mind and spending time on a hobby or with family can help us return to the task with a fresh outlook.

Thank you very much for your input. It encourages :)

Thanks for this great post.

I agree with techhound. You could even turn your building-a-playhouse project into a blog. Writing seems to come easily to you and sometimes a change of subject matter will give you new energy.

Thank you. I have to think about it. I have thought to open another blog to discuss things that don't fit into my present niche. So let's see, it can happen. Meanwhile, I collect photos as the building progresses.

Great experience, thanks for sharing. When I get frustrated I do the garden, I love gardening

Thank you very much for your input. Gardening is clearly great way to get out from an office - both physically and mentally. Unfortunately we don't have here any garden but there are other options :)

Hey Egon,

Great post!

Here's some food for thought. Why not write about your experience building that playhouse? We all need a break once and a while from blogging and more often than not, those breaks will give us ideas for our blogs that we can draw from.

Best Regards,
Jim

Thank you for the feedback and for the idea. I am thinking about it and in fact I would like to create another blog for different niche. This playhouse would fit into that one. But thank you again for your input. It is encouraging. :)

Extremely brilliant blog and wonderful that you know now how to handle the frustration and gain new insights while you are at it.
For me I call this gaining a new perception.
Thank you for sharing. Kim:))

Thank you for the encouraging words. My problem is that I am not native English speaker so sometimes I just don't have right words to express myself. Yet if I read English, I understand.

Then usually what I do, is I copy paste more interesting terms into my own database for future usage. And these ones "gaining a new perception" and "gain new insights" land in that database too :)

Aa, If I remember correct, then you are from Germany, right? Then your English is just so much better than mine hahahahaaa

Actually I live in the US and I am American. I believe you can add a plugin that helps with your grammar, punctuation and spelling. I don't recall what it was at the moment. Kim:))

Excellent blog! :D

Thank you very much :)

Hi,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. I totally agree and like the quote from Oliver Wendell Homes. We will experience trouble along the way. Be sure it's your friend.

I wish you all the best at WA in becoming a successful online marketer so you can enjoy doing more of the pictures you showed in the blog.

Thank again for sharing this with the WA community.

George

Thank you very much for your encouraging words :)
