Website Look and Feel - Simple or Busy

I have started to do site comments again. Besides reading the content and provide site comments as requested, I cannot help noticing how different people design the look and feel of their website.

Main Objective Of A Blog

Jay has taught us that the main purpose of our blogs is to engage the reader with our content. Because as bloggers, our objective is to use our content to help the reader make an informed buying decision through our affiliate links. The most effective way to achieve this result is to minimize distractions and to keep the reader on our content as long as it takes for them to decide whether to make a purchase or not.

Hence, when I visit sites where I see all kinds of offers in the margins, and pop-ups emerging too often, I wonder how successful that website owner is in achieving sales.

How Do You Engage Your Visitors?

There are many ways to engage visitors. And if your purpose is to get them to click a relevant offer that takes them to a third-party video where they are persuaded to buy, then setting up distractions may work for you.

If your objective is for your reader to click a link within your content, you do not want them to click something that takes them away. They may never return.

When I conduct a search in Google and open a link presented, I will leave that website if I am bombarded with offers and stuff to click. especially if that is not relevant to what I am looking for. That tends to drive me crazy as I get distracted from reading the content.

This is just my preference. If you are able to get sales using a busy and distracting website, more power to you.

But, if you are not achieving the sales volume you were expecting, you may find that your visitors are like me and don't like all those distractions.

Please Share Your Ideas

What do you think? Please share what category of website you have and are you happy with the results you are receiving.

Cheers.

Pop-ups, videos, etc. Drive me away quickly. Nothing frustrates me more than trying to read an article when things are popping up every three or four lines.
I think some of this is generational. The older we get the less we tolerate obstruction and jumping around.
All this page activity may not bother our younger counterparts.

Millennials and GenZ'ers can prove me wrong.

Hi Barbara,

I often wonder if those very busy websites succeed in winning sales. Jay teaches us to cut out any clutter. If the pop-up is a signup page con\nected with the article I am reading and if it doesn't happen too soon, I don't mind. WA uses similar techniques with its landing pages.

Thanks for commenting.

Edwin,

I am on that level of not liking sites that have so many other things happening on the page. It actually steers me away rather than attracts me. I am going with simple for my page. The training suggested ads as optional depending on preference and my immediate response was "no". When I imagined the visual to my site, it was simple and not busy. I don't think it's worth jeopardizing trust or being unattractive to visitors from all the other popups.

Thanks Dana for validating this sentiment. All the best to you.

People often design websites that entertain their own sense of "nice design" rather than creating a site designed to please a visitor.

To me, that's an amateur way that is great for learning and fun but not really designed for marketing purposes unless by luck.

Hi Richard,

It's like beating you into submission lol. Thanks for commenting.

I feel the same way, Edwin, too many popups, and videos also, that crop up when you try to scroll down, really narrows the field of vision ..literally and figuratively..grin.

I try to keep it simple and after going back to a site I've had for a while, I was able to streamline that website as well, looks much better now.

Rudy

Hi Rudy,

Glad you were able to streamline an earlier site. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Edwin,

I want what I want and if something is preventing me from getting that then I am gone. Thanks for sharing this very valuable information!

One of my websites is in the MMO niche promoting WA. The content on this website is the main focus and in the end I hope that they click on the link that will bring them to WA to see what is available to them. No distractions needed!

Have a fantastic weekend! Wishing you the very best!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Well stated Nichola.
