Picking Up Our Grandkids From Utah - This Will Be Fun!

We're giving our son a break this Christmas. He's a single father of 4 kids, 12 and under. Our grandson is only 18 months and this will be the first time we will be seeing him.

Since our son is working 10-hour days this Holiday Season, we're driving to Utah to bring the kids down to LA for Christmas and the New Year, to give him a break. He will be able to spend a quiet and restful Christmas with his girlfriend.

The last time we had kids in our home for Christmas was when our son was a kid himself.

Snow In The Mountains

This is the first time I will be driving to Logan, UT in the winter. Our son told us the road from Salt Lake City to Logan winds over mountains and can be snowy. Hopefully, it will not be heavy snow.

The last time I drove in the snow was when we were returning from a trip from Reno, NV in the winter. The road was not a freeway hence the cars were moving slowly. Channels were made in the snow by the car's tires and it appeared everyone made sure our vehicle tires stayed within these tracks.

The Next Day

We had a wonderful drive from LA to Logan. With three stops the 700-mile plus drive took about 12.5 hours. The final section of our trip was a dramatic canyon drive out of Brigham City to Logan as can be seen below.

The Jeep Cherokee had an amazing infotaintenment display. Once we entered our destination, it not only gave us driving directions, it also told us the speed limit on the roads we were driving, what cities were passing, and the estimated arrival time. Great to have the Sirius XM to entertain us with music even in remote areas.

Although there was snow on the ground, all the roads were clear. There was no falling snow. I felt the cold weather refreshing.

The grand kids were ready outside the house to greet us. Loved their smiles. It took a little longer for the 18-month-old boy to warm up to us.

Early Start Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will be making an early start. Our son got a bunch of meat from his food processing company for Christmas that he shared with us. I brought a cooler with ice packs to keep them frozen for the return journey.

Packing will be a challenge. Fitting one kid into a booster seat, the baby into the baby seat, the other kids into their seats, and all the paraphernalia into the back of the SUV will take some organizing.

Exciting Events

The kids are very excited to visit LA. We have a bunch of events planned while they're visiting. Theme parks are not on the agenda.

We have other fun places to visit that are age appropriate for them that will cost little or nothing.

One of these is a drive through Candy Cane Lane. This array of streets have for generations decorated their homes outside with Christmas Lights and Christmas icons.

Another plan is to visit a Danish themed town called Solvang. The Christmas spirit is well demonstrated by its inhabitants.

Return Plans

Our son will be visiting us after the New Year to take his kids back home.

We will make sure we will have a treasure trove of pictures to remember this very special Christmas Season. It will probably be a very long time before we all meet again.

Work Plans

I think I'll be burning the midnight oil to complete my website assignments. My motivation is to create a legacy for our son and our grand kids.

Clearly I won't be doing much during the two-day drive. But that's OK. I plan to catch up in short order.

I wish everyone a wonderful end of year push towards meeting your business and life's goals.

Cheers from my iPhone.

Edwin

Hello Suzay,

You encapsulated what we hope to achieve so poignantly.

Rain is forecast for most of the next few days that’s going to crimp some of our plans. Nonetheless, whatever we do the kids will enjoy it.

Thanks for your comments.

That is so awesome and sweet and heartwarming!! What a wonderful gift to give your son and grandchildren.

They'll definitely remember the Christmas they spent with grandpa, especially if they get laminated pictures they can carry around and then easily wash. Kids love pictures!

It might be a good idea to bring a couple pictures of your son to share when the kids seem sad and are missing daddy.

Have a great Christmas!
Kim

Hi Kim,
Thanks for the comments and the laminating suggestion. Well be showing pics of their daddy when he was their age ha! Missing him will be a good thing. They’ll be happy to see their dad when he comes down to pick them up.
Have a great Christmas to you too.
Cheers.
Edwin

Btw, I love some of the pics you've used here-that huge cliff face is super impressive! All the best.

Hi Matty,
I took those pics as the passenger when we were driving. Happy Christmas to you too. Thanks for the compliments too.
Cheers!
