Our Christmas Traditions Old & New

It's hard to imagine we moved into this neighborhood over 30 years ago. The family in the middle house are one of the few original residents who moved here when we did. The family in the house on the left has been here about 25 years.

At Christmas, we have a tradition to decorate our homes with lights. Nothing extravagant. Just enough to create a great atmosphere.

Since we moved to California, we have no family near us. My wife, Mary's nephews live in New York. The rest of our family members live in England, Canada, Australia, Spain, Switzerland and India. Our son lives in Utah and will be spending Christmas with his growing family.

Our tradition is to put on a typical English Christmas meal with roast turkey, ham, roast potatoes, and petite peas. For desert, we have the traditional Christmas Pudding that we drench in brandy and set it on fire till the flames die down. We add hot custard to each individual serving. Notice we do not go overboard with more items.

At the start f the meal we break Christmas Crackers(bon bons as they are also called). A firecracker inside snaps with a noise as two people tear the cracker apart. Inside there is a funny hat that we have to wear throughout the meal. There is also a surprise gift inside.

Wealthy people have elaborate hats and expensive gifts inside like diamonds and gold!

After we have our meal we open our Christmas Presents.

This year we a good friend who lost her husband last year will be joining us like she did last year. So Mary and I will not be alone.

I have spent Christmas in four different countries in my life. India, England, Canada and the US. Christmas in India was the most different. We were little kids then.

There were no such thing as department stores and supermarkets. We were taken to the tailors a couple of months before Christmas where my brother and I would select the material for our suits. And the girls, for their dresses. After picking the style, we were measured up. A few weeks later we would visit the tailor for a pre-fit. The clothes would not be completely finished so that changes could be easily made if necessary. When we finally picked up our clothes they would fit perfectly.

In the weeks before Christmas the shops would be decorated and Christmas fair would be everywhere. Most families prized their recipe for Christmas cake. These were variations of fruit cake. In our home we got the raw fruit and dried them ourselves to make raisins. Nuts were also used. But these were purchased ready to eat. Ingredients like flour and sugar were purchased. The bakery store would send one of their bakers to our home with a huge mixing bowl where all the ingredients were mixed.

Prior to the baker arriving we would line many circular cake tins with wax paper. And the baker would ladle dollops of the mixed ingredients into each. These tins would be taken back to the bakery where they would be baked.

The day of the delivery before Christmas, we as special day. That was when we would taste the cake to make sure it all turned out according to plan. This never failed.

During the week before Christmas, we would join other kids at various parties set up for children, of which some would be our friends. As always Santa Claus would visit with gifts for all of us. Later we discovered it was our parents who paid for these. And Santa wasn't real ha-ha!

On Christmas Day we would all dress up in our finery and go to Church. We looked forward to seeing the creche and the Baby Jesus in the middle. The rest of the day would be spent visiting friends. And when we ended up back home, other friends would visit us.

Of course, we would all serve our unique versions of the Christmas cakes. It was fun to rate all of them with each other. Some were more moist. Wile there were cakes that were dry. However, I loved the fruit and nuts and preferred cakes that had a lot of these in them no matter the level of moistness!

In that era, we decorated the Christmas Tree as well as the home on Christmas Eve. The Christmas feeling was prolonged long after Christmas Day was over. Quite the opposite of what happens in the Western World. The Christmas season didn't officially end until the Feast Of The Three Kings which was a few weeks later. New Years was in the middle so we had a fantastic extension of the Holiday Season.

With that in mind, I challenge everyone at Wealthy Affiliate to keep up the spirit of Christmas and the Holidays long after these days are past.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to All!

Thank you for the holiday wishes and the lovely descriptions of holidays past. Family is the key ingredient to a happy holiday. Consumerism is fleeting, though it seems important at the time. I try to avoid it the best I can.

I wish you and your family the best of the holiday season.

Alex

I truly appreciated your comments. We abandoned buying lots of gifts years ago. Spending time with Family and Friends means so much more. And when we given gifts, they are modest just to show appreciation.

All the best to you.

Edwin

Boomeranging back the same to you and yours!

Thank you Ryan!

Wow Edwin you won me over with your story! You should try writing books, you would make a mint with your ability to describe things so perfectly. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Lita, you made me gush all over with your kind suggestion. I'd like to share an idea I have with you to see what you think.

Several years ago I purchased a .com domain name using my name as it appears here. I never thought it would be available as there are so many people named Edwin Bernard believe it or not!

I never knew what would be the best way to use it until recently. Many of my personal blogs at Wealthy Affiliate had received positive responses. Generally people liked the range of experiences I have had that included living in several countries.

After mulling that over I thought it may be a good idea to write a running blog posts of vignettes of my life to entertain as well as to educate.

The three areas that come to mind are lessons learned, how others have influenced my life and the things I have done to pay it forward. Woven in this tapestry will be the culture of the places I happen to have been living at the time.

If this blog gathers substantial readers, that would encourage me to write a book. Most of the work will have been done making it a small step to editing it all into a book.

Since you brought this up what do you think?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Edwin.
Greetings from Canada.

I'm working on something and I wonder if you might be of a little bit of help to me?

The subject is "English."
The topic which I would like to start with is:
"The Story of Creation."

I wish you nothing short of whatever it is that you wish for my friend.

Thank you for adding to my life.

I think good things moving into 2020.

Remain awesome.

Greetings to you too Paul! How can I help with your topic? I'd like to know a little more.

You stated The Story Of Creation. There is the Biblical version and then there are scientific deductions. With all the talk about UFO's and Aliens even more theories exist today. This is a complicated subject.

How can I help you within that framework?

Cheers.

Edwin

I'm thinking something like this:
Keep it Biblical from the King James version.
The focus is not on the bible but the impact the Bible has had on English as a Universal Language.

The Segway is "Is English The Universal Language?"

The facts come as a discussion of basic accepted truths according to the Bible. This makes for some great discussion as a result.

The story would literally be never-ending but with a beginning.

The Story of Creation.
The Seven Days.

The Garden Of Eden

The First Sin

The Trouble With Sin

Cain Murders Abel

More and More People - Descendants of Adam

The Lord will send a flood...

This is kind of the direction this is heading, Edwin.
I will probably need some input and support to make this happen.

The water goes down.

The Lord's Promise For The Earth

God's Promise to Noah

Noah and his family
The descendants of Noah
The descendants of Japeth
The descendants of Ham
The descendants of Shem

The Tower of Babel

At first, everyone spoke the same language, but after some of them moved from the East and settled in Babylonia, they said:

"Let's build a city with a tower that reaches to the sky. We will use hard bricks and tar instead of stone and mortar. We will become famous and we will not be scattered all over the world.

But when the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower, he said:

"These people are working together because they all speak the same language. This is just the beginning. Soon they will be able to do anything they want.

They must be given different languages so that they will become confused as they scatter across the world.

That is how the city of Babel got its name.

I know, it's kind of boring but it has a direction.

Thank you for your interest, and any further feedback is very much appreciated.

Talk again, soon.
