I Had My Hand Trigger Surgery Yesterday - The Outcome?

My mobility of the middle and fourth finder of my right hand had been deteriorating significantly over the past few years. Until recently I had been receiving cortisone injections to alleviate my problem.

This condition is commonly known as "trigger finger". This article from WebMD explains it clearly and how surgery can cure it.

Deteriorating Condition

Within the past few months the locking of these fingers had been happening often. I had to use my right hand to unlock them. The orthopedic specialist I had last seen decided I needed surgery to cure my problem. Having too many cortisone shots would cause more harm than good.

My initial surgery had been scheduled last fall. For various reasons I had postponed the surgery several times. The most recent reason was to not risk using my hand when my grand kids were over for the holidays.

The Outpatient Surgical Procedure

I walked into the procedure room in the morning. After two injections of local anesthetic, the surgeon doctor got to work. Apart from the shots, I felt no pain. I hate looking at medical procedures and refrained from watching the action. However, I could hear the conversation between the surgeon and his assistant.

The surgeon stated he could do this procedure making only one incision. Shortly after he made the incision he told his assistant that the cartilage he had to cut was thick and that was how he liked it.

Then I heard a snapping sound, probably when he cut through the cartilage. I heard a second similar sound, probably from my other finger. I was asked to try and move my fingers. The surgeon was pleased with the results and asked the assistant to stitch the incisions up.

Incredible Results

I asked when would I be able to use my fingers. The answer was almost right away as soon as the numbness goes. My homework was to flex my fingers all the way at least three time as day. Then return to see him in a week.

Sure enough, I was able to move my fingers freely as far as the bandages would allow. It was a long time ago I could do this. The palm of my right hand is covered in thick bandages to protect the incision area. I can hardly wait till the bandages are removed. Total recovery will take about four weeks.

Being able to type, write and play the piano without hindrance will be an amazing feeling.

Take Care Of Yourselves

We tend to take our body capabilities for granted. Until we loose these capabilities. The moral of this story is to take care of our bodies. When something deteriorates, don't delay in seeking medical advice and help. It can make all the difference between doing out jobs effectively and not.

I am ready to get back to work. Between homeschooling my granddaughter for two months off course. Now that is a story for another blog post.

Cheers.

Edwin

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your good wishes. There will be a next time when my left hand needs surgery. I’ll not delay it when that need arises.
Cheers.

Was it a quick procedure?

Yes Brian. 10 minutes for each finger. I didn't feel any pain or discomfort. The surgeon was very good. Edwin

Good to hear, speedy recovery.

.
Thank goodness it was a success

Sometimes we take our body parts for granted

Until the day when that opportunity is taken away

I'm happy you're on the road to recovery

Have fun using your hand again ;)

Hi Simone,
The doctor had told me the surgery result will enable me to use my fingers like before. I was skeptical. It appears he he’ll be proven right after my bandages are removed.
Thanks for your kind wishes.
Edwin

Glad you are healing well :)
Have a great weekend ahead
