Have You Considered Going Beyond All Limits To Reach Your Goals Faster?

How do you think athletes are able to beat records? Those who succeed do so by going beyond all limits. They train hard, physically and mentally. One can have all the skills and knowledge in the world to beat records. However, if mentally you do not believe you can do it, guess what. You will not.

In fact, there are times when a competitor is able to break records even when they do not have everything they need. But mentally, they want it so bad and work so hard, they carve out an edge against their competitors and break through.

The Olympics Got Me Thinking

Did you watch the Olympics recently? Not only the regular one but also the Paralympic games! I saw several events where a competitor was trailing behind but pulled out everything they had to go beyond their limit and win the Gold!

What are the key characteristics we need to go beyond all limits? I learned these at my last coaching session last Saturday. May I share these with you?

7 Characteristics To Change The Game

  1. Clarity of Vision
  2. Well Defined Niche
  3. Ownership Of Your Choices
  4. Accountability Partner
  5. Honest Communication
  6. NO FEAR
  7. Believe

Each one of these points can command a blog post of its own to dig deeper. Perhaps I will do that in future posts. Right now I am going to choose just one to focus on.

Number 4 - Accountability Partner

When we have jobs as employees, we are automatically accountable to our boss. If you have one who reviews your assignments with you and makes it clear that you will be accountable, you have no choice but to accept that reality.

Being accountable is a good thing. It directs our mind to focus on the stated outcome and the steps we must take to achieve it. When problems arise, and they will, we are forced to discuss them with our boss and ask for guidance. A good boss will work with you to make sure you have the resources you need to complete the project on schedule.

What Do You Do When You Don't Have A Boss?

As entrepreneurs, we work for ourselves. We are our own bosses. Unless we are strongly disciplined and develop effective work ethics, the chances are we will go off track and not be able to go beyond all limits to achieve our goals.

This is where having an accountability partner can help a great deal.

What Is An Accountability Partner?

This can be any other person who we designate to be on our case to ask us periodic questions on our progress. And if we are falling behind, they are willing to discuss solutions with us.

Let's get one thing straight. An accountability partner is not for everyone. You must decide if having one can help you stay on track. They have to devote time and attention for your benefit, so you cannot decide to do this if you do not take it seriously and end up wasting their time.

At Wealthy Affiliate, we have a plethora of kindred spirits. It makes sense for two compatible members to join forces where each member agrees to take on the role of an accountability partner of the other member.

Does that make sense?

Accountability Framework

These members would need to work out an accountability framework, ground rules as it were, that will guide them.

It may also be prudent to set up a trial period within which either member can decide to opt out if they feel this is not working for them. One approach is to create a weekly action plan and share this with each other. At the end of the week, they can review their respective plans to see if they were all met or not.

Totally honesty is required. If either member reports they completed an event that they didn't, a course for accelerated failure would ensue.

I say accelerated because one would get a false sense of accomplishment that would make the part forward worst.

This Is Not For Everyone

I feel this is not for everyone for several reasons. If one fails to complete the weekly actions regularly, that will show the other member a side of you that you perhaps would not want to.

You may feel added pressure that could cause other problems. There may be other issues to consider.

Think carefully if you decide to use an accountability partner.

But then, your goal must be to go BEYOND ALL LIMITS. When you have a goal like that, I would think deciding to enlist the help of an accountability partner will enable you to achieve your goals on schedule and perhaps ahead of schedule.

You Need All 7

Here is another point to consider. You need the other six characteristics in order to justify having an accountability partner.

Ask yourself, do you truly want to go beyond all limits to rise to the top in your niche? Or close to it?

If that is your goal, then you have no choice but to go beyond all limits.

If that isn't, that means that you are happy with the way you are growing your business. There is nothing wrong with that. Be aware of one fact.

Do not have expectations to rise to the top if you are not willing to pay the price. All competitive athletes know this. Am I right or wrong in assuming not all budding entrepreneurs know this?

Your Thoughts & Insights Please

I would love it if you shared your thoughts and insights on the topic of this blog post.

All the best to you.

Edwin

I agree with you to a certain point. You may mean this in a different way and please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that there is some big price we are to pay for being successful. You can't have a miserable journey to a happy ending and vice versa. No matter what part it is that I am doing for my business, I look forward and enjoy each and every minute of it. Just some of my inspirational thinking......

Well stated Sioban. When I talked about paying the price, my thoughts were on focusing on the most important task at the exclusion of others until that task is completed. True, this has to be a task that we enjoy doing too.

The price is to stay disciplined to do just that, Those who find being disciplined easy, the price is almost non-existent. For those who find it hard to be disciplined, the price could be high.

It can be boring to perfect some skills, Once perfected, it will make our job easier and more fun. So the price is putting up with the boring bits.

As long as we have our eye on the ball, the overall experience is enjoyable.

Thanks for sharing your insights.

Edwin

Thank you, I understand what you are saying. Have a great week!

I've always considered myself a very disciplined person, Edwin, and understand that I need to push my limits and step outside my comfort zone in order to grow in life and business. I'm constantly working on that everyday.

An accountability partner is an interesting idea - but you're right - it would take some honesty and trust on both individuals for it to work properly.

While reading your post about accountability, I started thinking about mastermind groups for some reason. Would they be similar to an accountability partner?

Isaiah 😊

Hi Isaiah,

A mastermind group would perform a similar function. Napoleon Hill was a proponent of such a group.

Thanks for commenting.

I thought to have your own business you always need to constantly push your limits Edwin. If not your business won't grow and you won't grow as a person.
If you aren't prepared to constantly push yourself to improve your business by learning more, by changing and adapting then surely you are wasting your time.

Well stated Linda. These 7 points bring to focus areas that need to be met to push one's limits. What do you think of these specific areas?

Sounds like you would not require an accountability partner. What do you think about the other qualities I listed?

Thanks for commenting.

Edwin

Quite frankly if you can't be accountable to yourself and need someone else to be pushing you forward and looking over your shoulder then perhaps you should go back to a regular job.

Too many snowflakes who want the money without the hard work.

My 24yr old granddaughter started a business last year when her baby was 2 months old.
The business is doing very well through her own sheer hard work. She went back to work part time as well because she and her fiance are buying a house and saving to get married.
Yes she gets tired and doesn't always want to work late into the night doing orders but she does it because she is building their future. That is commitment.

Hi Linda,

Can I ask you a question? Would you agree that if #4 in the list was removed, you would NOT require anyone else to be pushing you forward? It all must come from within?

You must be very proud of your granddaughter. She definitely has what it takes to succeed.

If you had read what I deleted I did so because it was irrelevant. I do apologize.

Linda, I sure appreciate having this discussion with you.

All the best to you.

Edwin

Some like another person to keep them accountable I suppose.
Surely though if you want your own business it is because you don't want to be accountable to anyone.

It has to come from within, otherwise what would give us the push in the first place?
Do you feel the need for an accountability partner?

I am very proud of my granddaughter she has talked of having her own business since she was a teen.

I too like and enjoy discussions, especially when they make me think and stretch my brain a bit.

Linda

Hi Linda,

I would drive an accountability partner crazy! It’s an uphill battle to be disciplined. It takes me a great deal of effort to learn anything. This means I’ve got to work harder than most people and it takes me a lot of trial and error to get things to work.

Do I need an accountability partner? I don’t think so. But I do need a lot of help. And have no qualms in asking.

I am driven to succeed though. It takes a lot of patience because of the time it takes me to solve problems.

There was a time I taught Maths to adults part time in the evening. Since it took me a long time to understand the curriculum, I was forced to structure my teaching in ways I could understand the material. The students found it easy to learn from me as a result. That was fun.

I like how Jay teaches because he knows how to help us understand the processes we need in this business.

Thanks Linda for listening to me.

Cheers.

Edwin

I know what you mean about the learning. It can take m a while to learn new things too. Some come easily others are an uphill battle that I go back to over and over again.

I prefer to work at my own pace, plus I fit it around my family so work at odd times.
Needing help is different. Asking for help here is good because you get a lot of answers worded differently so at least one will give you the ah ha moment.

Thank you Edwin.

Hi Edwin

Great post I am not sure a physical accountability partner would work for me personally. This is because I have an inner one going on all the time.

You see I like to set myself a goal for the week. To write 5 posts and 3-4 if there is a review in there. It always takes a couple of days or more to write and publish a review.

Last week I achieved my 5 post target for the first time !!!

So I sat down with myself and internally gave myself a pat on the back. Because I don't achieve my post target all of the time. I sit and reflect on this and try to come up with ways to achieve the 5 posts.

Turns out it is usually to do with time. Either starting the post later than I should or having started my niche from scratch without knowing anything about it. Having to research too much instead of being able to write off the top of my head.

You are right you need faith and no fear to put it out there.

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your insights. I can relate to review posts taking much more time because of the research necessary. I can write How-To posts off the top of my head much faster too.

Kudos on being able to be accountable to yourself. It takes being honest with yourself and discipline to do that.

Congrats on meeting your 5 post week. That is amazing. The most I have accomplished in one week is three.

I wish you much success in your online business.

Cheers.

Edwin

You too Edwin.

I believe I was able to produce 5 posts because I now know my subject much better. BTW I am currently writing a best of post and we are into day 2 ha ha

Regards
Steve

Way to go Stephen!

This post provides good for thought, Edwin. Thank you.

I am accountable to myself as that works best for me.

Those 7 characteristics to change the game are great and one that stands out for me is No Fear.
Being fearful blocks the way to progress in whatever it is that we are attempting.

Congratulations on your 250 posts. A great achievement in the time you have been with Wealthy Affiliate.

All the best,
Valerie

Hi Valerie,

Thanks for sharing your insights on this topic. Thanks also for your good wishes on my 250 posts. Now, if I had only written that many on my primary website ha! I am working on that.

You will overcome your fear because you recognize it.

All the best to you.

Edwin

Thanks, Edwin.

And all the best with writing for your primary website. You will achieve your goals for that site as you are a greater writer and produce valuable and enjoyable content.

Valerie

Thanks for your commendation Valerie. O am a pretty fast writer once I have completed my research and gathered the pics I plan on using. It is the research and pic gathering that takes me a lot of time.

I think I just had an ah-ha moment. I have been struggling with what component of my blogging I need to outsource. If I can find someone who I can pay to do the research and pic collating that will help me move along faster. Something to think about.

Cheers.

Edwin
