Copycat Comments in Site Comments

Last Update: September 11, 2020

Since writing posts more frequently for my website I have noticed a troubling situation develop related to the same members.

Comments on My Scam Reviews

When I write about a scam, they say how valuable they found my review and that they have friends who are making lots of money from my reported program. And that they are going to join. Then I am thanked for sharing the scam with them. Strange response don't you think?

Duplicate Comments

Another situation is where more than one member submits a comment that is word for word like another members comments. Except for a minor change or addition.

Examples

Here is an example of two separate comments:

Comment 1.

While reading, I know that ACN Inc. formally called American Communications Network is an MLM company that has been in business since 1993. ACN resells through its IBO’s using a multilevel marketing business model.

Comment 2.

While reading, I know that ACN Inc. formally called American Communications Network is an MLM company that has been in business since 1993. ACN resells through its IBO’s using a multilevel marketing business model. Now I know that Donald Trump made millions of dollars from the company from speaking at the company’s conventions and making videos for its IBO’s to use in the recruiting process. We are planning to join the company soon.

This second one had an addition that repeated facts from my post, In fact all the comments repeated my post.

Replication

Regardless, all of these just replicated what I already wrote rather than giving original comments.

At first, I brushed these off and approved them. But when I noticed that two comments were duplicates that I shared above, I drew the line and rejected the second one and said why in my response.

All these members are from outside the US.

My Theory

I have a theory why this is happening. And it may also be connected why it is so hard to get posts to give site comments. They are grabbed so fast leaving nothing left to comment on.

50 cents may not be much in the US. But when added up to many dollars can be worth more in certain countries. I have nothing against members earning extra money this way as long as the comments are original and meaningful.

Am I Being Too Critical?

I am writing this post to find out if I am alone in receiving comments like these? Or am I being too critical?

Looking forward to your responses. I sure appreciate it.

Cheers.

Edwin

Hello Edwin,
What can I say that would help you get through this situation? What can I say that will develop an understanding in you to help you not Despair and give up hope? I may not have said anything if so many had not responded to your article that feel the same way. Therefore, I shall try with the hope and prayer that I do not offend you. It is my understanding that one of the main objectives of the WA Platform is to help others. With that in mind, I ask you to try to see this situation from a different perspective. The fact that someone took the time to leave a Comment at all on your website is commendable to you. This is because there was something you said in the article that 'Reached' them. There was something you said that 'Touched' them. There was something you said that helped them to learn and grow. The 'Quality' of the Comment may not have lived up to your expectations but, perhaps everyone is not as smart as you but they wanted to leave something to let you know they appreciated your work. My Sister has told me that my Optimism and ability to see the best in others, first, is to a fault. Therefore, perhaps you are right in your criticism of what has happened. I just know that you are smart enough to remember that there are 2 sides to every coin. Your work on this website is reaching others in ways you didn't expect. It is spreading Light, Love, and Compassion in ways you didn't expect. That is a good thing.

PEACE,

Hi Deatrice,

I'd like to explain what inspired the title to this post. I used the title Copy cat Comments because I have received exactly the same comment word for word by different individuals. That was what inspired my title. Let me now address your response.

First of all I want you to know that I truly appreciate that you care enough to write this message to me. There are a few comments you made that I do not fully understand. Hence I shall address these by quoting you followed by comments and questions.

Will that be OK with you?

"What can I say that will develop an understanding in you to help you not Despair and give up hope?"

Deatrice, I am a very optimistic individual, Hence I will never despair and give up hope. Can you tell me what gave you that impression? I am only trying to understand you better.

"I may not have said anything if so many had not responded to your article that feel the same way."

Do I understand you correctly that the only reason you responded was you read that a lot of other members agreed with my conclusions? Can I assume that my topic was of such a great interest to you that you not only read my article but also the responses I received? There were many so it must have taken you a while to do that. You have my thanks and admiration for devoting your valuable time to do that. I appreciate your counterpoint.

"The fact that someone took the time to leave a Comment at all on your website is commendable to you. This is because there was something you said in the article that 'Reached' them. There was something you said that 'Touched' them. There was something you said that helped them to learn and grow."

Deatrice, members who make comments clicked the Offer Comments button on Site Comments so that they can give comments to earn credits. When I see comments that are not related to anything I wrote, how can I have "reached them"? Many times I get the same comments for totally different articles. It's as if they have a stock supply of answers and copy and paste those. Sadly I see them coming from the same members. What is your advice under these conditions?

" The 'Quality' of the Comment may not have lived up to your expectations but, perhaps everyone is not as smart as you but they wanted to leave something to let you know they appreciated your work"

I wish this was true. If the comments related to what I wrote, or responded to the type of comments I requested, then I would agree. Take an article on a scam that I have written about. I usually begin my article by giving credit to the objective of the scammers so it can appear that I am recommending that product. But later I go into details why that is a scam and that my recommendation is NOT to support it. I research the product or service to see what kind of reaction actual customers have posted online. So when someone who comments thanking me for bringing such a good opportunity to them and that they are going to join that program right away I wonder if they read my whole article where I was trying to save them from losing money. Again, I want to know what your advice is in this kind of situation? How could what you stated in the quotes hold true? I am puzzled Deatrice.

"My Sister has told me that my Optimism and ability to see the best in others, first, is to a fault. Therefore, perhaps you are right in your criticism of what has happened. I just know that you are smart enough to remember that there are 2 sides to every coin. Your work on this website is reaching others in ways you didn't expect. It is spreading Light, Love, and Compassion in ways you didn't expect. That is a good thing"

Clearly your heart is in the right place. There is two sides to every coin. You are advising me to be more understanding of the people who write comments.

I actually go out of my way to accommodate some really bad comments. For the reasons you mentioned. Then I felt why don't I help the person to improve the comments they give? If nobody helps them how can they get better? The way this system is set up is when we reject a comment we can leave the reason why. And I always write my reasons in a respectful manner. I let them know why I rejected their comment and what they can do to improve. Because if they get too many rejections WA will block them from making comments. And if the main reason they give comments is to earn 50 cents for every two comments they give this will hurt them. Sometimes you have to give tough love. As mom you know that.

Are you telling me that I should accept ANY comment I get and that rejecting them is not good? I actually accept 95% of the comments I receive.

I hope you see what I am trying to achieve here. My objective is not to belittle the person sending the comment but to help them. And I feel that you would agree with me in that objective even if you disagreed with my methods.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I wish you much success in your affiliate marketing journey. I wish you Happy Dreams.

Hi Edwin,
Thank you for such a thoughtful and thought provoking response, Also, thank you for taking the time to explain to me the exact situation with Site Comments. But, to answer your first question, yes I did read your article and the responses. In fact, I do my best to read anything I see you have written because I find you to be very interesting and as an Ambassador, I'm trying to learn from you. Even your Reply to my previous Comment taught me a great deal. LOL! I understand how rejecting some of the Comments you mentioned under certain circumstances is the right thing to do. I just want you to know that I think your articles are far more important due to the focus they have on helping others. Thank you again Edwin and have a great evening.

Edwin,
Just a follow-up note on your blog, "Copycat Comments---" I posted a new article yesterday morning and 10 minutes later the first comment came in and then the comments began to flow In about 10 to 15 minutes apart.
I asked for1 comment and I specifically asked for an opinion on the subject. By yesterday evening I had 15 comments. Most of them managed to fulfill the request for opinions. All of them had praises for my work- but one took sentences word for word from two earlier comments and submitted it for her comment.
I use my answers to comments as a continuation of my article, so even a mediocre comment will carry added information.
The copycat I disapproved.
As you observed, all were from outside the US where 50 cents may be a lot of money.
All came through gravatar with no reference to WA.

You’re not being too critical. I just got three comments that are pretty much rubbish and I will need to rewrite them.

I keep getting comments thanking me for my “beautiful” article. The articles are not beautiful, they are reviewing programs. Sentences get repeated from my posts.

Not sure what to do about the repeated rubbishy comments.

Hi Mia,

Marc wrote a blog on this earlier this year where he suggested changes to Site Comments to correct this shortcoming. You may be encouraged to read it especially as Kyle responded and saifdWA is considering implementing those ideas. Here is the link: Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Edwin, that's encouraging. I love the the site comments platform but with the current state of it, I'm put off. The quality just isn't there.

I receive similar comments often, what is worst is that I refused such a comment a while back and the person that had written the comment (That I had disapproved) reported my article as being unappropriated and it was canceled by WA. Let me tell you I was fuming!

Nowadays I ask for 1 comment at a time and sometimes I just accept it even if it's not worth anything and then I just delete it on my WordPress dashboard.

That way I save myself a lot of aggravation!

Sorry to hear your plight. Marc also covered this topic earlier this year in one of his posts. He made some great suggestions on modifying the Site Comment Platform. And Kyle responded and said WA is considering implementing some of Marc's ideas. You may be interested in reading this. Here is the link: Thanks for responding to my post.

Not critical at all. I can understand if the copying content comes from maybe poor English skills, but I've seen it so often and it's starting to get on my nerves. I'll often reject it if it's word for word from my content.

I don't mind paraphrasing. Something like, "Because of your article I learned," followed by a paraphrase of something, but you're right, too often it's just direct copied and pasted from the article.

It adds no value and I'm not sure if it could hurt rankings in Google or not. Some people would say to just rewrite it, but that feels weird to me, and also more work that I shouldn't have to be putting in so someone else can make a buck.

Agree totally. I think you'll find this attached link has some hopeful information. Marc covered this issue in a post earlier this year. He got a response from Kyle that you should read. Just scroll down to find it.

Thanks for chiming in.
