3 Mistakes To Avoid In Affiliate Marketing

Of course there are many mistakes that one can make in Affiliate Marketing, but I decided to highlight the top three in my opinion.

They are all in one way or another time wasters if not done correctly. Time is our most valuable asset. Therefore, it is worth avoiding making these common mistakes.

Failure To Select An Appropriate Niche

This is a crucial way to make your presence known online. It is easy to mess this up by selecting a niche that is too broad or has a lot of competition. The idea is to give yourself a winning chance to attract people interested in what you are offering.

Just think about it this way. You can either select a very popular niche and face competition with the big guys. OR select something less popular and attract people because they are less served by the big guys who are mainly after big fish. And when the smaller fish are searching for bait, guess who pops up. You!

You will save a boat load of time worrying about insufficient traffic if you take the popular route. So think carefully about this when selecting your niche.

Expecting Quick Results

Quick can be defined as expecting result before its time. Like a good wine. You have to wait till it is mature enough to drink.

Rushing to get results will only make this worse. We are taught at Wealthy Affiliate that there is a proven process to be followed in order to get the results we seek. This takes time. The amount of time will vary based on the speed of ones own ability to absorb the information. Learn the skills and put them into action. We all learn at different rates. And that is OK as long as you do not beat yourself up if the process takes longer for you than others.

This is a classic case where it is so easy to waste time by rushing. Seems like an oxymoron. Right? Like rush hour traffic. It is impossible to rush in rush hour traffic. No matter how hard you try.

The best way forward is to go through the training methodically and systematically so that the time you do spend in taking action is time well spent. If you do not understand what you are doing, more mistakes will be made and you will have to redo things again. This wastes time.

So do not rush the process.

Lack Of Originality

Since we are all unique one would think it should be easy to be original. Guess what. It is easier to copy others than to be original. That will work against you since you cannot beat the original approach. There can only be ONE original.

It is far better to develop your own style even if it means making mistakes at first. This is also how you develop your brand.

One of the lessons I was taught when I did MLM was people "bought" you first before buying the company or the products. If you cannot show your customers that you are the real deal, you could come across as fake.

And if you don't like you? Work to improve yourself.

May I suggest seeking out other top bloggers and affiliate marketers websites and research how they are all original. By chance if you come across some who are copycats you will know that and pass.

Closing Thoughts

All three of these are easy mistakes to make. Knowing in advance what they are should give you a head start and help you reach your goals sooner rather than later.

If you care please share if you have made any of these mistakes and what steps you took to correct them. By the way, I know I have made these mistakes too.

I deliberately selected the Make Money Online (MMO) niche because I want to promote Wealthy Affiliate. Since I know this is a challenge I have to expect my journey to success to take longer. And I have to work harder to be original to compensate for the high competition. I truly believe in the end it will be all worth it. Why? I see proof that others are succeeding. And so will I. Little by little I will use the strategies that others have shown to work. And off course write a lot of articles on my website in my chosen niche!

I wish you much success in your affiliate marketing journey.

Excellent post Edwin. Whilst you are waiting for your brand to mature it is only natural to second guess yourself about your niche, your ability to be original and in general to not wander off looking for a shortcut. I think you only know that you have a grasp on all 3 ideas you have presented, once you start reaching your goals.
All the best

Mr. Edwin Bernard:
Amen.
Yet I've a bit more to add. Maybe I'm off here yet check it out.
.
"Failure To Select An Appropriate Niche" -right on.
Yet I do not see this as "failure" unless I allow for it to destroy me. I see this as a learning moment instructing me that this formula is not working, at present.
Yet again, YES -selecting the appropriate niche is critical for future / forward growth within the marketing arena.
.
"Expecting Quick Results"
You nailed this one. Gonna require the investment of time. Time proportional to the learning curve we must go through.
.
"Lack Of Originality"
I believe once this business is learned & experienced & under the belt, "originality" comes easily into play. Thus Wealthy Affiliate. For now, being mentored is to become like the one mentoring. To become a brain surgeon or a truck driver or an internet marketer, gonna have to copie someone before the originality can happen.
Then again,
who am I whom highly ranks?

Thanks so much for your insights. Your points are well taken.

All the best to you.

Great reminders there Edwin. I also am in the MMO niche. At first, I did not realize how competitive it was but selected it for the same reason. I wanted to promote WA because I truly believe in this platform and wish to bring it to others.

Even though it is highly competitive, I am ok with that. I do occasionally wish the traffic to my website was better. But, I also understand the number of posts has a major effect on how it will produce. I do accept the responsibility to create content to attract traffic.

I am attempting to do more research to bring more content to my site more often, but the Christmas holiday events with my wife and daughter play a role in my time. I am finding myself getting up earlier in the morning to work on my website, go to my hourly job, and spend time with my two favorite ladies in my life.

Here's to your success and I wish you the best!

I'm doing the same thing Bob! All the best to you.

Here’s to the early risers! 👍😀

Thank you for your post Edwin!

My niche is affordable US college education and its quite focused and not too popular. But the problem I often have is that since my focus is on "affordable", I also list many free and low-cost resources. So I'm having a hard time finding good affiliate products except for Amazon books and a small number of services.

Many of the education-related products that charge well and which I've reviewed do not currently have any affiliate program either.

Think what students need and use that are related. Like computers, mobile devices, expensive text books, travel needs, places to live in, clothes appropriate for college. You can create a storyboard of a students life and come up with all sorts of products related to it. Food even.

They live in dorms. What do students take with them there? Speakers for music. Microwave ovens. Coffee machines. Decorations.

You don’t have to restrict it to just the college education itself. If their college courses cost less they will have more money for these other things. Just use your imagination.

Hope this helps.

That's a great set of ideas! I'll customize my approach and start thinking along these lines. A way I can deliver value and still make good affiliate income.

There you go. When you help your students find value in their education, even if it includes free stuff, you will be building trust and creating a relationship. Make sure you build your Email list from them so that you can keep in touch on a regular basis. Not just to sell them stuff. But to get to know them and to find out what things they are interested in. Then give it to them.

You can make this work.

Cheers.

Edwin

Something else that occurred to me as well when observing sites online is to possibly include things like Adsense etc. Basically advertising on your site and an extra means to bringing in revenue.

Hope this helps.

Good post Edwin! My niche has big competition, but I chose it because it's something I'm passionate about and can write easily. That's what I needed for me. Now that I have some experience and training under my belt my next niche will be more unique.

Thanks for sharing! Karen

Great plan Karen. I also selected a high competition niche because I am doing the Super Affiliate Challenge and promoting WA. I paused my first niche, Low Cost Legal Services because of the SAC. That was a relatively low competition niche. I’ll be returning to that when the SAC ends.

I wish you much success Karen. Thanks for your comments.

Edwin

Hi Karen,

I should have asked you this the first time. If you don't mind saying what niche did you choose?

Edwin

Skin care over 50. Much success to you too Edwin!

I love this specialized niche. Way to go Karen
