How Long Will It Take Me To Be Successful?

Last Update: August 22, 2019

It always amazes me when people ask me that question or the variations listed below:

  • How long did it take you to be successful?
  • When did you earn your first sale?
  • How many hours do you spend and how much do you make?
  • If I put in x hours per day, how much can I make or when can I expect to be successful?

Depending on where you are in your business, you've either asked these same questions or have heard variations of them.

Time for some tough love.

Here's the thing, none of these questions really matter or apply to your situation! Yeah I said it! But hear me out before you start rolling your eyes and getting offended.

Often times these questions are really just symptoms of one or more of the following:

  • Insecurities
  • Inaction
  • Impatience
  • Doubt
  • Desperation

What does it really matter how long it took myself or any other successful online business owner to succeed? None of us are clones of each other. There are always variations on how we process what we learn and more importantly how we apply it. So even if I told you it took me a week to become successful, it doesn't mean you will. Oh, but I want to have an idea or range to strive for?

Let's Reminisce...

Prior to Wealthy Affiliate most of us were destined and accepted that we would work for "THE MAN" for damn near the rest of our lives or until we can retire. If we were lucky, we would have a nice little nest egg. Then if we were still healthy enough or had the finances, we would spend the remainder of our lives trying to do things we really wanted to do while we were busting our ass for the man.

So that was probably 20-30 years of your life that you would have readily given up for someone else that really doesn't care about your success. But now, you have the opportunity to dictate how much money you deserve to make and what you could do with your time. And yet you have the audacity to be worried about how long it's going to take you succeed?

Does that really make sense? Isn't that disrespectful to yourself, your dreams or family? It shouldn't matter how long it will take you to succeed if you're really about that life of freedom & prosperity!

Exceptions To The Rule.

So I don't sound like a total tool, I want recognize that some people are asking the questions listed in this post because they need income right away because of dire financial situations. This article isn't directed at those folks. My advice for people in that situation is to focus on quicker temporary solutions like getting a work at home job until you can get your business to where it can totally support you. For everyone else that falls into what I described previously, I have the solution for you below.

The Answer!

Your business is exactly like the quote above. It's about getting to the finish line. When you get there doesn't make a difference. You just need to reach whatever that finish line is for you, your family or whatever is motivating you.

So do yourself and your dreams a favor, don't limit them to time frames. Stop comparing yourself to others or imaginary time frames.

Instead, get out there and bust your ass for yourself as you would have done for "The Man" for the next 20-30 years. Scratch that! Work harder and longer because now you're working for the company called "Me, Myself & I!"

What do you guys think? Am I off base here? Chime in below. I would love to hear your feedback. I'll be the first to admit I've been guilty of some of the actions listed above so I'm speaking from experience.

Please free to share this article here on WA or outside of WA to anyone that may find it useful.

Thanks for reading my little rant.

Eddy

P.S. My bad if I've offended anyone but sometimes we all need real talk. LOL =)

Thank you Eddy for sharing your well written, well put article - I needed to hear it too, because I wanted to make money in my FIRST year with WA, but I did not work the program and do the training CONSISTENTLY FOR 9 MONTHS, even though I was paying $47.00 a month for the program - so I could just KICK MYSELF for WASTING all that time, when the program and the training were sitting RIGHT HERE ALL THE TIME for me to JUST DO IT, and move forward - but NOW I'm moving on to Level 3 and right NOW, I just want to make my first SALE...... or first WA referral or JAAXY referral, or SOMETHING...... and THEN work toward my $10,000 a month.......

I'm glad you could admit to yourself you needed to put in the effort consistently. Some people like to blame everything else but themselves. And their results reflect it. But you're on the right track now.

And just like tonight - everyone else in my house is ASLEEP, and I'm up DETERMINED to finish LEVEL TWO completely, so I can move ON to Level THREE TOMORROW...... I do have the Broncos / Texans football game on, but it's muted, so I can hear Kyle training or I can hear myself think while I'm typing my "success" blog post that I just wrote to wrap up Level Two, and now I just got a reply in the live chat that I was just a part of, and it's 11:26 pm in South Carolina, and I'm still working....... thanks for responding!!! Hopefully I REALLY AM on the right track now....... here comes the dough!!

I remember many late nights and early mornings working on my blog and I still do it. So the work never stops.

Enjoyed the article Eddy! You're right, for the most part,it shouldn't matter how long it takes us to succeed, but if we have goals for putting our kids into college, or continuing to save up for them a car, etc., then it does kind of matter! The clock is ticking so to speak! I have a 10 year old and a 20 month old, which means that I only have 7 years left to finish getting him squared away with college funds and a vehicle. He will work to take care of his gas and half of his insurance, but I want to give him a good start, as well as my little girl. The work at home jobs that I read on your website will help to pay the bills that don't stop coming in, and the necessities. For those of us that have kids, and the mediocre income aint cutting it, it is more pressing and urgent! You being a parent yourself, I know you can understand that! Just my thoughts!

P.S. I wasn't offended by your article, just thought I'd give my take for those of us who have kids depending on us, especially for those who may be single parents.

Gotta love a person who is real with no beating around the bush sugar coating stuff. My dad a Marine Corps vet taught us the old school way (hard knocks). I got my wakeup call in the Marines too. Talk is cheap, actions speak volumes. Best to you.

I appreciate that David. Being old school is such a lost art and needed.

I'm glad this was posted. I read reviews that this was not a get rich quick site and I'm hoping it's not. It seems a lot of people have their goal set too high and will not stick with it when they get discouraged. I want to use this site to learn and see if I have the knack too make it work. I want to take my time and do it right.

Yeah this is definitely not a get rich fast scheme. It's a real business that will take time and patience.

I'm glad to see I am far from the only person who feels this way about the high monetary goals some beginners set. I firmly believe in setting realistic goals. An example I like to use is dieting. A lot of people will say "I want to lose 30 pounds" and when they diet for two weeks and lose only 5 they get discouraged and give up. But if you start with "I want to lose 5 pounds" and you lose that 5 pounds in 2 weeks then you're excited and encouraged to set a new and higher goal.

Agreed. But everyone is different.

Eddy,

I'm about to turn 57 years old (young) this Saturday. I can honestly appreciate the words you shared here as I have been in the rat race since I was in the military for 4 years then in the pharmaceutical business for almost 25 years in management. No offense taken here. Quite the contrary. Please continue to give us all a dose of reality...

I agree. The reason I am working through this program is to hopefully supplement my income and be able to have a sustainable income going forward. I have a regular full time job. I wanted to take the first step toward being self sufficient, and create passive income for my retirement years.

Well you'll definitely be able to achieve this in time.
