My Father Served Canada In WWll

He signed up at age 17 because his 19 year old brother and all the Vancouver BC Canada neighbourhood boys were signing up to protect and serve!

Within his first month, the Jeep he was in drove over a land mine. Five of the men he was with were immediately killed.

His leg was blown apart but hanging on by a few tendons. He tourniqued his femoral artery and covered himself with the bleeding bodies of his friends.

The German Army men came and poked him with their bayonettes. He lay perfectly still and quiet to save his life.

Once the Germans left them all for dead, a group of Belgian Soldiers ran out of the woods, found him and readied to take him for help!

He cried out: "Do not let the surgeon cut off my leg! I will not live as a one-legged man!"

His leg was "FUSED" in a fixed position of function and he took part in physiotherapy for years!

He was transferred back to Canada to Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver where he met my Mother, the caring, attentive and beautiful nurse!

He never complained!

He never spoke of it!

He and I watched the black and white war history shows on TV...completely quiet but with great emotion!

I loved my Father dearly!

He survived WWll!

But more importantly, that survival gave him a second chance at life...and he took it!

He affected me more than he will ever know!

I am gratefull to all of those who have served to keep us safe and free!

Remember!

Barb...grateful daughter of a WWll Veteran!
