For years the public referred to people with disabilities as HANDICAPPED. They have no idea what the term really means or where it comes from.

During the early part of the 20th Century and especially after the depression when people stood in line st soup kitchens you would see someone on a street corner with a cap asking for money.

I became a common term used for people with disabilities---which shows a lack of respect to someone

the terminology changed when congress brought people with disabilities in to ask how they could craft a law to meet their needs

People with disabilities work and pay taxes too. Part of acceptance and integration into society is showing respect to someone who isn't perfect

Accommodate everybody.

Showing respect as it applies is the proper thing to do. Something that we should all practice without hesitation.

Similar to the term "mentally retarded." The new proper term is "intellectual disability."

None are perfect. No, not one.

no, it's developmental disability is the proper term---I used to train companies on the ADA

My son has recently been diagnosed with an "intellectual disability" and that is how it was explained to me. I would consider his speech disability developmental, however.

there's a difference between a developmental and intellectual disability---

Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem solving) and in adaptive behavior, which covers a range of everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18.

Developmental disability is a diverse group of chronic conditions that are due to mental or physical impairments. Developmental disabilities cause individuals living with them many difficulties in certain areas of life, especially in "language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living".

Then my son has both. Thank you.

Tolerance and acceptance should be the coins of the realm

A lot of us here are entering that threshold Davida. thanks for posting!

People have challenges. It's just to what degree. There should be no difference and we should not judge others based on those challenges.

I have to agree with you. A lot of society does not have respect for the disabled. In my opinion if you don't respect yourself how can you respect others.
