Make Yourself a Priority

It doesn't matter who you are, but especially women who are considered the caregivers, will often put others in front of themselves, when it comes to taking care everyone's needs. We need to learn to make ourselves a priority in our lives. That means taking care of your needs, as well as, taking care of everyone else's needs.

Here are some ways that you can make yourself a priority in your life:

1. Self awareness---The first step is to look at why you don't make yourself a priority.

  • Are you too busy to take care of yourself?
  • Why does everyone else’s needs come first before mine?
  • Do you have to make sure you get your full to-do list checked off before you can relax and take time for yourself?
  • Is there an underlying emotion that comes up at the idea of self-care such as guilt or selfishness when I consider my needs?

2. Create some rituals for yourself--Rituals help you to stay grounded, balanced, and calm in an ever-changing and busy world.

  • A cup of tea when I wake up gives you time to reflect while sitting at the table.
  • Stretching at night for a little exercise.
  • 50/50/50 - squats, sit-ups, and push-ups with your husband first thing in the morning.
  • A daily planning sheet before diving into work reduces stress.
  • Turning your phone on airplane mode around 5:30 pm to start dinner before you welcome my family home.
  • Yoga class one day a week
3. Simplify everything in your life.---When you simplify everything in your life it helps with health, finances, relationships, and work,

Simplifying means having more time for those things you want to do... including putting yourself first yourself.

Imagine what we would let go of if we choose to simplify. Whenever I've made progress in simplifying my life, it has been rather freeing.
Thanks, Davida.

Great piece of advice. Many of us in the caregiving field never find time for ourselves.
Your article has inspired me so much - things have to change.
Thank you
Margaret

Very helpful post Davida. Often we do tend to put others ahead of ourselves especially when it comes to family and close friends.
