How Times Have Changed

When I was a teenager, after the surgery I was given an orthotic similar to this one to sleep in at night. It was cumbersome, but it did allow me to gain strength in my fingers for some mobility. After the first couple years, I found myself wearing it less and less to sleep in; and eventually lost it from moving around a lot.

Recently, I got a hand orthotic similar to this one. The purpose of this hand brace is to keep my wrist in the proper position. Instead of sleeping in it, I wear it all the time. This seems to be better than the other one, simply because it keeps my hand in the proper position and allows me to get better range in motion in my hand, since I have limited use of my fingers anyway. With my hand in this position it's easier for me to call my fingers, plus I get better mobility in the movement of my hand.

It is been 50+ years since my surgery and it took a long time for technology and science to help people with disabilities live a better quality of life, with in their limitations.
