There really are no words to describe the Universe. Well, that is not true. Many words describe it.
Awesome…Magnificent….Mysterious….Breathtaking…Mind Blowing
It’s everything. All of space and time and all of its contents make up the Universe. This includes planets, moons, starts, galaxies, all matter, and energy. Where the words fail me is trying to understand the vastness of the Universe.
The Hubble Space Telescope is responsible for increasing our knowledge about the Universe. Its launce on April 24, 1990, was the start of the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo’s telescope. Our view of the Universe and our place within it has never been the same. Because of Hubble, we now know there is an estimated 100 billion galaxies in the Universe, with others still to be discovered. Our own Milky Way galaxy, which contains our Solar System, is just one of them. It has over 200 billion stars, of which more than half are 4.5 billion years old! Hubble provides us with a framework to view and understand the Universe.
We can liken the Internet to the Universe. Its size is growing each day, not only in the information it provides but also in the people that use it. I read that between Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook, at least 1,200 petabytes of data is stored. I cannot imagine the size of that number…and that is not even all the providers of data on the Internet. According to the United Nations agency that oversees international communications, more than 3 billion people are now using the Internet. This is an increase of 738 million users in 2000 to 3.2 billion users in 2015, according to a new report from the International Telecommunication Union.

You know...I rarely think about the vastness of the Internet. I think my mind freezes up when I try to fully understand the height, depth, and breadth of the Internet. How comforting to know that we don't have to make our way alone.
