Saving My Wrist

The repetitive motion of moving a mouse around is not a motion for which our wrists and forearms were designed. The wrist and forearm can hold huge amounts of weight compared to their size. They can apply lots of pressure with a twisting motion. Eventually, the constant motion of a mouse, despite being small light movements, will begin to cause pain. Every hour you spend working on your website may be a hour with a mouse.

I suggest purchasing a roller baller to replace your mouse. Movement is confined to you fingers and thumb. The ball, acting as a mouse, remains in one place while your figures roll it. There is little motion in the wrist. It takes a bit of practice to become accurate with a cursor run by a roller ball.

They are relatively inexpensive and are usually have a usb connector.

A number of years ago, I was helping to unload trucks for a couple of months for two hours daily. I was moving cement blocks, bricks and bags of motar. My wrists began to hurt so badly that I went to a doctor for a wrap recommendation. He checked me out and said that my arms and wrists were made to do that that kind of work. His recommendation was to replace my mouse, at work, with a rollerball. I did that. The pain cleared up within a week.

I am no ergo expert, but I know a roller ball helped me. Ask an ergo person or a doctor about a roller ball. It may well make it easier for you to keep on fishin'!

Hey, Drjec good advice. By using a product like this will help cut down on carpal tunnel disease. Which I have heard can lead to a doctor performing surgery.

Please see my reply above. This could really help you!

Yes very true indeed James and thanks for sharing.

Johan.

Hi James, very true indeed. Irv.

Thank you for sharing this great information! I will definitely have to look into getting a roller ball because I have noticed pain in my wrists after working on my computer for long periods of time.

Please see my reply above. This could really help you!

I just read your reply and thank you for this great suggestion.

I have a mouse "rest" that has a raised front pad where my wrist rests and allows my fingers to just touch the top of the mouse, which then moves freely on the soft pad. My wrist doesn't have to bend down which is what brings on carpal tunnel syndrome and pain. I bought this pad on Amazon for a few dollars. I worked as a medical transcriptionist for the last 19 years, typing about 3000 lines a week, sometimes more. This black pad works great for me and I highly recommend it.

I'm sorry to hear about your wrist problem. I couldn't do my typing with a rollerball, but I can see that would be handy for a laptop.

Thought I should go back and see my Amazon orders to find the mouse pad I bought: Belkin WaveRest Gel Mouse Pad, at that time $8.95 (prime). I bought it in January 2016 and haven't had any problems since. My husband likes it, also! He has arthritis in his hands and shoulders from motorcycle racing as a youngster in the 1960's.

On this I am an expert, typing for long hours at a time. NEVER type or use your mouse while letting your hand 'hang down' to the keys or mouse. Also, while sleeping, don't let your hand hang down over the edge of the bed, keep your hand straight-on from your wrist. There are wrist supports available at most drug stores, etc., and they work like a dream. The minute you have pain put one on and especially keep it on for at least one night sleeping. It is wonderful how this will clear up any problem in just one night.

Hope this helps. Please let me know. As I said, in this I am an expert, in WA I am a newbie! Thanks, Kyle!

I hope that I never have to experience this at all. So, I am taking your advice into consideration as well as drjec's.

A mouse pad with a wrist support for a computer, and a roller ball for a lap top; got it!

Building a website that we can be proud of.

Regards,

Becky

Personally, just want you to know. When, and if, I ever get a laptop, I probably will have along with it at all times, a mouse. I type fast and a rollerball just will not do it for me. But, I understand all of those younger than I am, which is almost everyone here on WA, will do well with a rollerball.

Of course! Absolutely!

Becky

Now you can explore fishing fly casting ergonomics James!

Good to know. Thank you

When the snow clears up i'm going to take your advice on it.

Thanks! I will look into that! A roller ball! I have no clue, but I will do a search on Google for clarification purposes!

Thanks for the tip!

Becky :)

Please see my reply above.

I'll look into this. Thanks.
