Online Broadcasting Softward - Part VIII - Making a Video

This post will put all the parts together from past posts to make a short video. This may be the most confusing post. In many video editing programs, you can cut clips and paste them together. With OBS you stack the clips as scenes and scroll through them to make a video.

Once you have set up a series of scenes with images or text or media in each, you can go to the first scene hit record and either manually or automatically scroll through the scenes as quickly or as slowly as you want. When done, hit stop recording and answer yes to the question that pops up. This creates a basic video clip.

The image above is one video clip in a short video I made for Youtube. The list below are the "Scenes" I scrolled through after hitting record. The first is an image. The second is that image with text. The 3rd is the first image with different text. The 4th is a video clip and so on. I generally scroll through the scenes in 5 second intervals.

So this particular video would be a short, about a minute long. It would begin with an opening scene of our senior adventure and end with a shot of a stove top removed. True, it's not very exciting, but it's practice.

The short video created would be saved in my OBS videos file as an .mov.

Next, I would create a scene and use that .mov as a media source and add a second media source of back ground music to the scene.
.

To add the music to the video, the play function is hit on both media sources. The highlited media source would be the video I just made. Media source 2 would be music to be added.

.

When media sourc 2 begins, the audio is added as shown by the bright green line below. The first media source has no audio. When both sources have played through the recording is stopped.. This will be another .mov but there will be a sound track.

A voice over can be added by placing this .mov into a new scene and adding an audio component with a mic. I find it easiest to create a voice over track separately and add it to the video and music. In this case, media source 7 would be my video with a sound track. Audio Input Capture would be the voiceover track I created.

.

Both media sourc 7 and audio input capture would be played and recorded. This would create a video with sound track and voice over.

So basically, you stack up scenes with sources in them and scroll through the scenes while recording to make your video. Then that video becomes a source in a scene along with an audio clip you want to add. You play them together while recording. That clip then is put into a scene with a voice over clip you have created and you play them together while recording. Easy, eh? You now have a video with background music and a voice over.

Here's your home work.

  • Create 5 scenes with a different image as a source in each scene.
  • Add text as a source to at least one scene.
  • Make at least one scene a media source by adding a gif from animatedimages.org.
  • Highlite the first scene.
  • Hit record and scroll through the scenes at 5 or 6 second intervals.
  • When done hit stop recording and yes.
  • Place that video into a new scene as a media source.
  • Add some music into that scene as a second media source.
  • Hit play on both and record.
  • When done hit stop and yes.
  • Place that video into a new scene and enter it as a media source.
  • Create a scene with audio input using a mic.
  • Then add that audio input source to the scene with with the video media source.
  • Play both and hit record. You have made a video with a sound track and voice over.

You have done all these things in previous home work. You just have to string them all together. Don't worry about volume or timing. That is easy to fix with practice. With many video editing programs you string video, audio and voice together. With OBS you stack scenes with sources stacked in them and record as you scroll throught the scenes. Next we will go over live streaming. Don't worry... with practice you will be able to "Keep on Fishin'."
