My Advice on Voice Recognition

I am writing this post to offer advice on using voice recognition to type articles, posts and emails. This advice comes from more than a decade of working with a number of voice recognition programs in varied applications. I will go into a bit more detail about my expertise, but, first, I wanted to offer some suggestions.

Don't Use !#@%$&@ Voice Recognition

For my entire adult life I have done a huge amount of typing daily. Years ago people told me that voice recognition software could make my work a lot easier. So, I have tried almost every program suggested. "It will learn you voice inflections." "It builds a vocabulary based on frequency of word use." "This program is 98% accurate." Now, it's even in our phones.

Well, I say, "~@%$#&**@!" Think of all the words that sound close to other words.... and then blush. I have certainly learned to proof read thoroughly after sending off a few emails that weren't quite what I wanted to say. Corrections for spoken content take longer to fix that typing out the document twice.

I decided to try again by reading WA blogs on a tablet and then speaking comments. Recently, one author offered a list of ideas in a blog. My comment was almost that I really liked the "sex suggestion" rather than the 6th. So, once again, I have gone back to old school key boarding. Hey, I started working with carbon paper for copies, Now I use a computer and printer. So, I am kind of a new age man in a 60's kind of way. Don't feel guilty if you hate trying to speak your content. Just "Keep on Fishin."

Everyone is always looking for a shortcut, trying to find that one thing which will give them a leg up on their competition. Voice Recognition software is often one of the leading ideas.

I've seen so many people get messed up by this. Just as you describe the incorrect words being chosen, I've also seen poorly constructed sentences which ultimately mean nothing! Most people don't speak using perfect grammar, and thus that is reflected in their dictation as well.

People, if you are going to use dictation software, at minimum use Grammarly to check your results! Otherwise you'll actually hurt your blog!

I think that if I am going to write then I should write. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for saving me some time. I was considering spending some time checking this out. I do see the benefit.

However, I had wondered about editing. I have a definite Texas drawl, that makes me winch when I hear myself trying to read to grandkids.

I don't think my diction is good enough to give the voice recognition software a fair chance. I prefer writing with pen and pad, but it is so much faster on the computer.
Thanks, for your information, and the comments were helpful.

Certainly give it a try and see what happens. I just found it very frustrating. Thanks for commenting.

You should try it when your a Kiwi who lived in Australia for a long time and the Vietnam for 15 years.
I get , or got…lol..some very strange responses.
I have used them in the past but with the time taken In checking it is not worth it. Even the free version.lol.
I keep going back trying different ones and probably still do 1 a month, but always end up over the keyboard.
However I do like text to speech.

I do the same thing. I keep trying always with the same results. Thanks for reading and responding.

I have trouble writing through speech. I can bang out thoughts on a keyboard, that I just can't seem to articulate the same way when I try to "speech" them.

Actually plain old writing on paper seems to work the best for me. Maybe I should try writing that way and then just reading it into a speech-to-text program.....

That's an interesting thought. If you try, let me know how it works. Thanks for interacting with the article.

Good points to remember.
