Learning + Experimenting Equals Success - Sometimes
Well, I retired..... again. Isn't the saying, "The 4th time is the charm."? It's been a little over two years since I participated a great deal with the WA community. I haven't stopped working on my sites. With some free time, I hope to get back to helping in and learning from the WA community.
COVID changed the nature of my job completely as it did for so many people. Online meetings became the norm. This wasn't a problem for me because I had been using online meeting forums to visit with my grandchildren living far away. For me a problem of techno ignorance developed when COVID demanded that I live stream major meetings, including presenters many miles away, with no internet in the meeting area and no equipment...... by myself.
What little I knew about live streaming and equipment helped me to experiment to the point that I was able to devise a crude system that worked. I ran 150 ft. of ethernet cable from the nearest internet source. Then, dug up 3 old web cams and 3 camera tripods to include shots from different parts of the meeting area. The picture above shows the CPU and monitor that I used. I ran a 15 ft. mouse cable to where I stood so I could manipulate the computer programs from a distance. I learned how to use the basic functions of OBS to pull all the various presenters and presentations together when needed. With all the missed matched equipment, we sure had a messy looking meeting area. But, dozens of people were able to participate in the meetings with all the normal parts and people. But, they weren't there.
This narrative is not an example of my brilliance. (I might get into that in a future blog.) Rather, it's to encourage people to push through and figure out. There are a lot of resources available to solve problems including Youtube, friends and family members, past experience and the WA community. When we hit a problem with our website, a diagnostic tool, plug-in, equipment or anything else, it can feel like an insurmoutable block, but really it's an opportunity to experiment and learn. You are absolutely right we have so many resources to make it through obstacles and succeed. And WA is a great community to ask questions, make suggestions and get ideas.
