Dog Teams and Affiliate Marketing

When was the last time you drove a dog team? How did you learn to rig the team? Who taught you the proper commands? When was the last time you wrestled with a formatting problem on your website. How did you learn to space that banner properly? Who answered you questions when you got stuck?

Both activities, driving a dog team and maintaining a website, are the same. Well, except for a few difference like one involving animals while the other involves code. What I mean is that neither involves simply intuitive knowledge. Both demand learned skills.

More decades ago than I care to reveal, I left the subburbs of Boston to work in an isolated community in northern Ontario. A friend there taught me to drive a dog team. Several times, I ran his dogs, with him riding along, across a river to drop off packages at the train which was the only way of going south. I was nervous and the dogs knew it as I yelled the wrong commands. My friend yelled correctons to the dogs. Eventually, I got the hang of it.

A few years ago, I decided to build an affiliate marketing business by creating a website. I had read lots of websites but never worked with one other than to fill in personal information. It was obvious I didn't know what I was doing, but friends offered me help. Eventually, I got the hang of it.

My point may be a little trite, but with instruction and practice, we can learn to do just about anything. My friend was a great support. I will never forget the thrill of running those dogs. The expertise here at WA is a great source of knowledge. It supports the thrill of learning and creating. If you are new to WA, I encourage you to take all the lessons you can and do the practical work. You will get the hang of it. If you are an experienced WAer, keep learning and building. Whether you have to drive a dog team or tell your customers about a special sale, you can do it. That's why I always say, "Keep on fishin."

I think this is a great analogy. A website needs and alpha and direction, otherwise everyone is pulling in different directions. Yes there is plenty getting done, but it is scattered and lacks cohesion.

I have websites like that, and I am desperately trying to pull them together.

A clear direction is a must.

Hmmm, when was the last time I drove a team? Uhm, the end of February! I know, I'm the exception here rather than the rule. (Here's a post showing one of our boys; they are both the wheel dogs, so very strong - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/jeanninec/blog/the-pet-industry-is-inflation-proof)

I totally agree with your analogy, It's practice and work, but you can eventually get it and then the ride becomes smooth.

Interesting story, and way to share that when starting something new, there is a learning curve.
Thanks for the share,
Sami

We all need help along the way and the WA members and owners offer that unconditionally.
A great place to earn and learn.

A delightful post and fantastic analogy, Jim!
