Adding Text to Header, Footer or Side Bar

Here's another work around that I use fairly often.

From time to time, I want to add something I have created to a header, footer or side bar. Anything placed in these page areas needs to be added in html or text. Something like a dialogue box, logo, image or banner must be converted to html. As I have written many times, I don't code. I copy and paste. It took me awhile to realize how simple it is to convert anything to code and place it in these areas using Word Press.

1. Place what will go into your side bar onto a page while in the "visual mode" using the "add media" tab. You will already have had to capture and convert the item to be placed into jpeg or png, however you choose to do that. (That's another training.)

2. Make sure you know where the content to be copied is on the page and switch to "text" mode.

3. In text mode, copy the html for what you want to transfer to your side bar. Once copied, be sure to delete the html so the item doesn't show up on your page in visual mode.

4. Go to Appearance>Widgets>Text.

5. If your theme supports additions to the footer, header or side bar, you will have to select where the text will go and then click "add widget"

6. A blank text box will be added at the bottom of the column, for the area you have chosen, on the right side of the page.

7. Paste the copied html into the box marked content adding a title to the text for future reference and hit save.

When you look at a preview of your page, you will see your addition as the last item of the side bar, header or footer. To change that position, go back to the "add widget" page, capture the text box you have added and drag it to the correct position. There are a lot of steps to this process, but it allows you to easily add anything you want to your sidebar. I hope this little work around helps you keep on fishin'.

Thanks, Jim.
Very easy to understand and implement.
Thank you for sharing.

Paul.

Good stuff. Ingenious.

Thanks, for this new technique, Jim.

This is basically what I did to add my affiliate disclaimer to my sidebar.

I have used this same 'trick' before Jim and it works like a dream. Good to be reminded about it again. Mark

Cool trick. I will have to try that if I need it in the future. Thanks.

It's funny that I am reading this post this morning. I haven't done this in a while and I had to do it last night. Was trying to figure out how to move my subdscriber form from the bottom to close to the top of my side bar. It was moving but was not being saved.

Eventually after a couple hours I figured it out by trial and error. A little late but thank you for sharing, lol. Will bookmark it just in case. Make it a great weekend.

HA That is so clever - thank you! I think I'll run off and try it right now - :)

I hope you understand how important these type posts are. Simple, easy to understand and practical.
