Hi friends, another day another post. Cold and windy in Adelaide today but with great bits of sunshine.....can't wait for the hot weather! Today one of the things I needed to do was to close the Shopify store and it wasn't as hard as I thought it might be. Usually when you build something up and then have to take it down; its not exactly cause for celebration. But closing it was not that difficult actually. I made sure I saved all my copy and images to the laptop and bang its was done! After this post not going to give it any more thought or energy.....

The reason the online part of the shop did not work is (I think):

  1. Lack of traffic to the site (I only had about 350 unique visitors to the site over several months - that is lousy in my opinion!)
  2. SEO very difficult in this niche at the international level (which is where I'm going to be pulling out all the stops to try and master this skill)
  3. I was not interested (and still not) in running expensive paid marketing campaigns, full stop. As a part-time trucker there is no way I can afford PPC or the like. At this point in time I have to trade money for time. Down the track, that might be a different story when Im scaling up, watch this space! I am however, keeping the other side of the business which is the the servicing part (under the same domain name) whereby I offer minor bike repairs and servicing including a mobile service. While the revenue side of things is not setting the world on fire but it does help with fuel costs and some bills and a small amount for saving. The reason that has succeeded is (again my humble opinion) is because of a few things I did a little differently. Here are some most likely reasons below:
  • I carefully researched gaps in the local market - no one offers a mobile bike repair service (not sure why - its not hard). So I focused on including that in my discription and phone message bank (in case I was not available).
  • When I did my SEO keyword research (using tools like Google Keywords) I made sure to include my suburb (which is Edwardstown) in the search terms. As I noticed there were no
shops in that area offering that particular service. Eg: using terms like - "Bike Shops in Edwardstown" or Bike Repair Shops in Southern Adelaide". That worked a treat as I had plenty of calls from customers who needed repairs or a service done to their bikes (these calls came within days, the power of Google).
  • Using free resources like local directories (White and Yellow Pages etc) to have the listing up there (and they work surprisingly well). I won't go on too long but the essense and personal findings of this post are this:
  • If something is not working after many attempts shut it down and move on. There is no point in spending time and energy on something that has died or about to die. As the late Kenny Rogers sang "you gotta know when to hold em and know when to fold em!"
  • Spend the time to research gaps in the market and keywords. There are usually cracks in any "SEO pavement" as the saying goes. Its just a matter of finding those cracks.
  • Be willing to go that extra mile when it comes to keeping customers happy (and that goes for any business). Eg: This one particular customer wanted her son's bike fixed and repaired. Even though I don't offer a cleaning service I gave her son's bike a good clean and detail. She was bowled over by how her's sons bike looked and gave me a 5-star review. People love pride in workmanship - and that's as true today as its always been.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for reviews (as long as its within the guidlines of your country and complies with all online regulations). Reviews are gold to any business person, online or otherwise, especially in the digital age.
  • Write things down and keep accurate notes
  • Never badger people - no one likes it (including me)
  • Try and make your business/service or product unique to you. If you're using the affiliate online model like here at WA, then try and incorporate something unique about your service. Eg: - If its something you know a lot about or have personal experience with, instead of drawing inspiration form other work, (which is nothing wrong with) go the extra mile and write from scratch and share advice and tips with the customer, they will love the authenticity. Its a bit like baking a cake (not that I've done it!). Bake one from a packet....oh yeah its ok (still greatful for the effort, big smile now), but bake one from scratch, its like....man can I take the cake home! You get the idea!
  • Put yourself in the shoes of your customer - how do you like to be treated and also is this business person solving a problem that I've got (that's what it all comes down to)
  • Keywords - can't stress enough how important they are. They are basically the "engine house" of your business, epscailly if you're going down the organic SEO route like me.
  • Most importanly of all my freind, don't give up! Anyway, I think that's enough chat for today, hope this finds you well and stay tuned for more posts coming soon....take care

Will need this later i guess.

Wow, you're attention to what is required is impressive, Matt!

I'm really excited for you in letting go and recognising what is not required, to open up the way for new growth.

In a way, that is the process I'm going through at the moment too.

Best wishes,

Jacquie
