Do The Hours Absolutely. But Be Sure To "Switch Off" as Well

Come down with a cold the last couple of days and feel a bit crummy (not mentally but physically yes). So I'd thought I'd do a bit of writing and hopefully spread some posisitve thinking. I was talking to my mate the other day whom I met in the mines in 2014. He's from overseas and I always remember when we used to talk about the value of work or business and how it can improve your life. Then one day we go onto a talk about what is a healthy work life balance (in terms of hours at least) and I was surprised by his answer. He reckoned we should all be moving to a 5 to 6 hour day and at least a three day weekend. I've heard this not long ago in the media I think it was in the UK where they thinking of trailing a 4 day week. Apparently a scandinavian country (can't remember which one) trailed it with amazing results. Productivity went up, worker morale went up and sick days went down. People were happier, they actually wanted to come to work.

Now this is coming from a guy who (like myself) who was putting in x30 12 hour shifts in a row with only one day off (unpaid I might add) as we were shutdown specialists so we had to be onsite that long. It was basically our job to re-boot everything, clean and re-adjust machinery and check instuments (I'm originally an Instrument Technician by trade). Extremely demanding work in tempertures up to 45C (about 113F). Even the night shift was still extremely hot but better than the day shift anyday. To say everyone was hammered with fatigue at the end of the placement was an understatement.

Although the money was good, I started to realise working at this level long-term is not healthy, which is the reason I don't do that sort of work anymore. I saw a comment also by Kyle and Carson the other day which got me thinking. They said "don't approach this as a job" and I know I said on my profile I'll put in 8-10 hours a day on this business but I've actually had a re-think of that. Especially being a new dad, I want to be there and play with my son and have energy doing it and not feel like I've done 15 rounds in the boxing ring. I've also heard a lot of talk about working smarter - not harder and it makes sense. Even Kyle himself said in the training about 20 years ago it took days and days to make a website, now its a matter of minutes.

As far as technology goes, mobile technology has been a huge aid in getting things done quickly and effcicently. However, my advice would be at the end of the day switch off from the work side of things (if you can) and only answer personal communication. Some people have seperate phones for work and personal which is a good idea also. Each to their own I guess, whatever works for you. I guess thats why a lot of people are now doing thier own thing and trying to start their own venutres and be thier own boss and set thier own hours. You work 8 hours a day then do so, if its 5 then its 5.

Next post will be about Shopify and what my experience was with them. As far training goes, I'm just about up to doing keyword reserach and wirting content onto my website, so its getting there!

Very nice post DrivenDad. We all have to work out what we want from life and how much time of our lives we wanna spend on which activity.

Thanks Aparna. Yes, and working that aspect out of life can be a challenge I try to write informatively and with value. Glad you liked it!
