The Power of Curiosity

I try to be a helper here at WA - though by no means am I an expert! If I know something, or have experienced something myself, I'll lend a hand. I have many years of experience as an editor, so I can always help with writing or design layout critiques. I may be a little too blunt sometimes, but when I was working, you just didn't have time to "pussyfoot" around the things that needed to be changed. I've worked with computers since the days of the TRS-80, so I can usually help with software issues (and I'm learning more about WordPress every day). And I made a living as a writer for years, so I think I have something to offer there.

But one thing that will help EVERYONE is to develop your basic sense of curiosity.

Trying to develop a business over the internet is like trying to lasso an octopus. There are so many moving parts that it's almost impossible to truly isolate one element to see how it works. Kyle is good about sharing what he knows, but keep in mind that your web site is unique. YOU have to pay attention to what's happening to YOUR business, too. And that's where the need for curiosity comes in.

It's one thing to ask, "Why am I not getting more traffic?" It's another to dig in to Google Webmaster Tools and truly dissect your search queries. And if you don't understand what GWT is telling you, your curiosity will drive you to watch some of the training that Google offers. Likewise, if your affiliates offer banners vs. coupons vs. specials vs. text ads - what's the best way to use them? Your affiliates will no doubt offer some training, too - and your curiosity will force you to watch and learn.

Fear is the natural enemy of curiosity, and I see so much fear out there. We're afraid to use that plug-in, or try that new theme, or branch out or pull back or whatever. It's natural, but don't let it win! If you've backed up your site, there's pretty much nothing you can do that will destroy anything. Give it a try! Learn! Ask questions. Dig! You'll find your curiosity can be a true friend.

I agree with your points of view and being a curious person by nature, I always explore outside the box. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
