Hey all,

There are so many things that people struggle with when it comes to their websites, and I'm not just talking about newcomers here either, but everyone.

For

Whether or not to put adverts. I go to so many sites where the adverts seem completely inappropriate to the site. eg internet marketing site - advertising 'The Coaching Academy' It just irritates me - so I don't do it. I would like to be able to do it and get it right!

That's probably a result of ad re-targeting. Instead of showing you an ad relevant to the site, Google will show you an ad relevant to something you've searched for or visited in the past. It's the latest craze.

I'd only put ads on a site when it is an information site and has no solution or product to offer, literally where people are just searching for information only, otherwise it's just not worth the pennies.

with EVERYTHING !

Haha, sounds like you need to just take it slowly and step by step :) if you get a specific question, throw it in here or search for it in the existing training.

Sidebars confuse me some, but what's confounding me at the moment is that I upgraded my Wordpress theme and I can't figure out how to upload it to WA so I can use it. Any ideas?

so, you bought a new theme and downloaded the zip file? You can go to "appearance -> themes" then click the "add new" and switch to the "upload" tab, and upload it from there.

Thank you, Dom! :D

Good topic, I know i personally have an idea as i'm sure everyone does when they build their site how they would like it to look and flow but as a beginner not knowing how to accomplish it can be extremely frustrating. I'm not sure if there has been any webinars or good step by step articles on the points you brought up but I know I would love to see/read them if so, if not It would be nice to see someone put a few together.

all the various aspects I mentioned above have been generally covered in loose individually trainings, and some wabinars too have covered the basics of setting up a site (particularly some of Jay's case study ones), but there isn't exactly a step by step "all in one" training, perhaps because it is based on individual preferences. I might try to put something together, will see what the rest of this thread pans out like.

Thanks DomW for your response, I really appreciate the advice

No problem :) I know the feeling, I think we are all a bit guilty of wanting our sites to be perfect!

Same problems here, I just changed my theme because my site looked terrible. I am on this site at least 15 hours a day every day..I just cannot get it right. Pretty frustrating, so close to throwing in the towel.

If you are tweaking it all day long and can't get it right, then worry about it later, do some writing and site promotion and so on, and next time you assess the look of your site, you'll be doing it from a fresh angle.

With some of the themes I use, you have options to edit the color scheme of the site. This is something I have a hard time with and often resort back to the default setup.

I've tried some of them charts for picking 3 colors etc but doesn't seem to help me.

Yeah, the more I seem to fiddle with colours, the worse it ends up looking.

I would say my big one is getting the page to look right. What size images to use and the over all appearance of the pages or posts. Then there is the getting traffic and social media.

Images stumped me for a long time, now I just tend to use one at the top, which is the full width of the page, and it seems to work pretty well.

I'm looking forward to this discussion Dom!

Great idea, this is going to help a lot of folks :)

Carson

Cheers! So what do you struggle with? Apart from fixing Kyle's beer spills?

The technical stuff drives me crazy, including code, mostly because of the amount of time it takes to figure it out. ~ Jude

Yeah totally. I find I can sometimes "troubleshoot" code by picking at it, but I can't generate it at all.

This might help some people out, or maybe it will just help me out!

I'm curious, what sold you all on IM? I'm not talking specifically about WA itself, but the concept of

Hi Dom. Well those questions got the brain gears turning! To be honest, it started with my love of computers. I have an illness, so a regular job is rather difficult and I want to earn a living. For me, keeping my mind and brain active with something I like is the way to go and I enjoy studying/learning. I also like to be different and enjoy a challenge.

Browsing the Internet was confusing when looking for genuine ways to make money. When you know virtually zilch, it's easy to be fodder for the sharks, and yes I did fall for a couple of promising methods, but they weren't for me. So I kept looking.

I first became aware of WA through Ian's youtube EN vid and then found Kyles, EN blog and was curious. After joining as a free member, it didn't take me long to realise the amazing community that is here. Coming from EN it was easy for me to see the difference. Personally, it is important to be with like minded people and have support. Yes others may manage without those. We're all different. I thought "I'm as good as anyone else, why not me?" So here I am - stubborn, dedicated, frustrated, happy, on top of the world, a student, determined to succeed, etc. Many things, but all the while knowing I am succeeding at this bit by bit!

I know what you mean. The support was a major key in my success. I always get immobilized by uncertainty, and having someone to bounce a few ideas off really helped me keep moving.

After getting scammed not only once, but three times, I came across WA by sheer coincidence. I was trying to research the last scamer I fell for, Anthony, and read an article, I believe by Kyle, with a link to WA. I figured worth to try it since there was not a "money up front" deal. After getting a feel of what WA is all about I signed up,

I need a second income, plain and simple. That's why I am here.

What was it that attracted you to all those scams?

Well Dom, that's not easy to answer. I guess their performance can be real convincing. Take AM for instance. The video he is showing with "4 students" setting up the 8 step program and their accounts and "the next day" they all made over $400.00. My bad. I am happy here and know I will make it.

OK, I think my question was worded wrong, I meant what were you looking for? an automated system? just pure income via any method?

More likely I did not know any better and had to pay the price. Forgot the saying "if it sounds too good it is too good to be true".

Freedom, lifestyle & income potential for me. Putting the skills I have to good use and making a difference rather than being a small cog in a corporate machine along with the financial limits that come with having a J.O.B. I found IM in 2008 when a new major project at work meant I had to re-skill in any an area that didn't interest me. I remember thinking "this isn't what I want to be doing" and went home and search for "make money online". I found a WA review video from Travis Sago and signed up shortly after. I am also drawn to the Martini elements of IM - anytime, any place, anywhere :-)

Yeah, nice one. So it took you about 4 years to go full-time though right? The same things kept you motivated the whole time?

Yes the same things kept me motivated but at the same time, fear of stepping out of my comfort kept me there in the J.O.B. It was the redundancy from my job this year which was the shove in the right direction that I needed.

Since finding out about my redundancy, I've been the most productive in my IM endeavours with 3 local SEO clients in the bag this year and more on the horizon :-). I could (and should) have achieved this level of success much sooner had it not been for the 'comfort' of earning a regular paycheck.

Ha true. Similar situation myself on that front. Is your added productiveness because of more time, or because you know you HAVE to make bank?

Definitely more productive now because this is now my only income source. I'm taking a leap of faith but I feel confident that I'll make this pay.

Actually a scam got me started and I was fascinated by the ability to make contact with people in places I didn't even know existed.

So..researching the scam led you to WA or what?

I always wanted to travel so I figured learning how to make money online would be great. Also I hate the 9 to 5 system. Just hate it. I prefer doing 14/15/16 hour shifts here than doing 8 hours at a job.

So I guess my final answer would be freedom and mobility :)

I know what you mean. It's a lot easier to put an entire day into IM than it is to do 4 or 5 hours for someone else. Especially once your eyes have been opened

As a woman of retirement age, I wanted something to compliment my retirement pay and keep me engaged. I chose IM and more specifically Affiliate Marketing because it can be done from anywhere and on my own time schedule. Time spent with grandchildren is very important to me as well as having more time with my husband. IM makes it possible to balance everything.

So for you it is 100% more about time than income, the income is a means to more time.

I wanted to live in China and make US dollars while I slept. The idea of making income across several time zones what what really got me excited about this whole thing.

ah ok so basically you were a playa. Got it. :)

The reason why I want to be successful at IM is to gain freedom from working for people who don't appreciate me or my work, and to be totally independent and responsible for my success.

That's a nice one, you get to feel like you have value

Was getting paid off from my last job and was finding it difficult to get another one. Did a bit of searching on the internet and found there are loads of ways to make money.

Come across the bum marketer technique (starting off with no money) suited me as that's where I was at and followed them here. Signed up and got started.

I actually got a job a few days after being paid off but as the seed had been sown I continued down this path to eventually have an income I can depend on. Still working to that end.

So it's more like "security" for you?

What sold me on IM was the fact that I could do it from anywhere in the world with just an internet connection, a computer and almost nothing else. Being from a small island in tthe Caribbean, I really needed that since I was trying to suppplement my income.

Yeah similar thing to me, being an English teacher in Taiwan limits your options if you want to stay in the country.

Could you provide a sample screenshot of a typical local business search using Yahoo in Taiwan? By looking the serp, I could help you out.

For example, maid service or carpet cleaning

Ok, I typed "Maid cleaning service taipei" into yahoo.com.tw and here is a screenshot of the results: http://d.pr/i/yJRA I don't know if it is of any use (especially as there's a lot of chinese in the way)..I always use Google to do my searches but the majority of Taiwanese use yahoo and as they are the target demographics I'm gonna have to get familiar with yahoo.

OK, from what I can see, there is no local directory stuff for Taipei.

So a strategy would be to focus on the initial keyword and local area within the content of the clients site.

Other strategies you'd want to look into is search 'taipei business directory' and see what listings come up where you can add your clients' site and details.

Ok awesome, straight forward stuff, thanks for that Jay
