I have a post from Christmas and many others probably have posts from the Black Friday sale that they published but that are no longer relevant. Do people delete these posts? R

Deleting any published posts will give you crawl errors in your Search Console. Revise, leave it be or simply create an article based on a new keyword and somewhat internal link with the old one.

Aha, good to know. You mentioned this before Cathy when I was asking about temporarily pulling a post to revise incorrect information. Now Im going to write so that I remember -- all posts are pretty close to permanent in terms of publication, but always revisable. This is a good rule to keep in mind.

Seasons are refreshed. Events are refreshed and they should be kept for refreshed sales opportunities!

Will try to figure out how to refresh for the next Christmas season and keep until then.

I agree with those below. Keep them! Update annually or add something at the top like "check here (link) for today's update".

Great idea.

Now that my "replacement" post is getting filled out I can see how building out "backup" posts to seasonal posts could become a regular consideration. This also gives me an opportunity to expand my internal links. Its all good. Everyday at Wealthy Affiliate is a new lesson.

I don't know what others think but I would delete these posts. You probably have to delete them from both places

Just My Take

I understand your opinion, Jerald, but Google doesn't like it when you delete posts.

Personally I just leave them but don't promote them on social media. I then update them to make them relevant next year. If people do go to themand read, I will have links to other posts on my site so they may take a read of those instead.
Do not delete posts, especially if indexed.

Yes, I was wondering about the post being indexed. Makes sense to leave it then.

Don't delete them. If Google knows they are there, they can just age and climb in the rankings for next Christmas. In the meantime, perhaps you can just add a paragraph that says something like "Until we get the next batch of Christmas specials, click here for the latest deals". Then link it to something current that you keep updated.

That's a great suggestion! I think I'll do that with mine.

Doc Doug, great question, I'm glad you asked it

Love the idea of a line to redirect to another post, especially since I am making another more permanent post with regular deals right now. I thought I was making it to replace, but now Im making it to support the older post. Got it. :)

I wrote a review article that I have found to be less than accurate. I need to move paragraphs, add content, and delete sentences. Its just been up for a day. I want to kill it

Linser, have the article being officially published in your WordPress?

Yes, its published in WP.

Then it's probably indexed already. Deleting from WP will not 'remove' it from the web. You'll need to do a 301 redirect to point the old URL to the new URL to prevent crawl errors from showing up in your Search Console.

If you need help with this, let me know.

But if you don't intend to change the URL, there's no need for a 301 redirect. it's okay to rewrite the content as you like.

Aha ok, so keep the title the same. I believe I can do that. I did not even think of the URL -- thanks!

Thank you Kathy for sharing that. It's something that can be used in the future by all of us perhaps

It is still in SiteContent under "Published Articles."
You can place the post in draft mode and do your editing in WP.

David

Will putting it in draft mode remove it from being seen on my site? I dont want people to read it as is and become misinformed.

Yes it will. It will treat it as unpublished.
Just in case it has been indexed already, use the google remove URL tool
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/removals

Not indexed yet. Ok, I will investigate draft mode. Its good to learn what options are there.

Just checked in Site Content for "draft mode" @DEversley and I cant seem to see it. There is a button for "edit" but it sends me to WP.

Draft mode is not in SiteContent it's in WordPress itself.

Awesome - found it! Thanks @DEverley and @Cathy Ling for those two important pieces of information. Entries nto the notebook for sure.

You are welcome!

WA Affiliate Program

Hello All,

What do people use to track your income from different vendors with whom you are affiliated? Are there any good little tracking softwares you can recommend? Or

Wow did I just learn a lot. Ok, so the update is that there are a few different programs to help up track commissions from links in our articles. I just wrote and published a review article on my affiliate site. Apparently its pretty hard to become a super-affiliate if you dont use one of these handy tools, which are somewhat of an industry secret. We dont publish our site info here so if you want to know more, please send me a personal message. Im super happy I found this.

Great info, Doug. I look forward to reading the review article you wrote on your site.

I like to keep a spreadsheet in Google Docs because I can access it directly through my browser easily and transfer information over from my networks or emails. Eventually when it gets big enough I will outsource to an accountant.

I have just found a program that tracks your commissions directly from your page links and banners so that it is all there in one place and can be exported to Excel. Im going to look into in more deeply and probably purchase a subscription since its only $10 for the premium version. I want to check out whether this program really does what it needs to for affiliate marketers before actually recommending it, but I will report back here.

Are they all on different networks? That's one of the advantages of working with a network - all the reports are in one place.

I've seen many affiliates use an excel spreadsheet. You'll determine your key metrics pretty quickly to only grab what you need. Then perhaps you can pull a monthly or quarterly report from each merchant for more info if you want.

I dont have a lot of product showing up in my niche in the networks and some of the product is not what I would promote. Im in a brand new niche and many of my retailers are also brand new so the networks are not a great place for me. I only have a dozen articles up on my site but am already running into problems tracking the many individual retailers that Im working with.

May I ask your vertical? Perhaps I can make some recommendations?

hah you got me there -- what is a vertical?

A vertical would be something like women's fashion, sports, nutrition, toys, coin collecting, etc. It's the category in general.

Ah, thank you. Well my vertical and my niche are the same, cannabis. Its a complex area. Location makes all the difference concerning what can be sold, to whom, made where, which version.... that's why the affiliate networks are not as helpful.

I wish I had this problem...but I guess that I'd go for an excel spreadsheet and possibly look for an affiliate tracking software as Jamie suggested...but first let's get any $$ in !!

spreadsheet.

Hi Doug,

I googled "software for tracking multiple affiliate vendors" which yielded quite a list of affiliate trackers. Seems to be an important addition to an affiliate marketer's toolbox. Thank you for opening my mind to see that such useful technology exists.

Best,

Jamie

Hi Jamie - thanks, checked it out and these are programs that track affiliates for retailers so they can offer affiliate programs. That actually answered a question I posed earlier about how I can help retailers in my niche who have no affiliate program, but have products I want to sell. I can direct them to one of these programs.

I am going to keep digging and see what other trackers I can find to use for the affiliate marketers end of the business.

Well bonus, I just found WordPress Affiliate Platform plugin that anyone can recommend to a retailer who wants to add an affiliate program to their business. It doesnt answer my question, but I can now make more affiliate links... but I still need a way to track my sales across multiple affiliations.

Good idea, and good info you presented here.

I don't have the problem yet Doc. But I have a ledger pad that I plan to begin by just simply writing everything down as it comes in, keep track of it that way. Then later as things progress, as Marion suggests, put it on an Excel spreadsheet.

Wayne

We should be able to do better than tracking on a ledger or a clunky excel sheet. There are a number of things we typically want to be able to calculate as affiliates such as currency conversions, tax, and changes in percentages in commissions since many programs have commission stages.

Eventually you'll want to contact an accountant. In the meantime you can set up a spreadsheet (Excel or similar) to keep organized.

If I have several articles written, are there any SEO benefits to timing out the publication of them so as to keep my involvement with my site continuous? Or should I just try

Scroll down the thread. Kyle has the answer to your question.

Thanks Cathy, I'll keep the SEO aspect that Kyle mentions in mind.

I think 3 post per week is recommended. I think its good though as long as it is regular posting, like once or twice a week...as long as it's consistent.

Good content should score independent of any schedule Linser!

See thats what I was wondering Michael. Ive got fewer than 10 articles on there and more than half are Google indexed. Seems like Im doing what Google wants to see, which seems to point to that saying.... which I should just be saying and answering my own dern question -- Content is King.

Ok, the content is excellent, so up they go.
(hand letting go of balloons image inserted here - haha - thats when you know you've been writing in Site Content too long)

I think it would depend on the content. If it is all addressing the same topic then roll it out over time. If you have several categories and topics then put them all out to keep everything topped up.

Of course how often you can write and punch out good content is important as well. Don't want to run out of the good stuff too soon!

Absolutely Jake. And thats exactly what I was doing, topping up my menu content. I'm writing great content article upon article because there's too much to write. So last night I thought, wait a minute, I need an approach and some advice here. But this excellent threat reminded me that Content is King so that fall right in line with what you are saying. Thanks.

Yes, Google likes to see a regular publishing schedule. So schedule like 3 a week is a good starting schedule to have. Then as you write more you can increase it.
